“Sorry,” I say anyway. “I appreciate any help I can get.”

“We will do what we can,” Jax says.

“You know we are with you,” Kerian says.

“You deserve her, Bash,” Ava says. Her words mean the most. We started in a rough place, she and I. I admire her.

“What are you thinking, Quinn?” I ask, watching him frown.

“We only have five people that I am unsure about.”

“That’s good odds,” Blue says.

“Who are they?” I ask.

“These two were assholes, but I can’t see them doing this.” He shows us the files. “They would be too afraid to ruin their manicures.” He pushes them aside. “These two have tempers. I don’t know if they knew it was Marie following them. They were pretty straightforward cases. They happened fast and disappeared. I don’t know anything after that.” He reads the last case in his hand. “I forgot about this one. She did follow him but not for long. I got some disturbing information from the girlfriend.”

“What kind of information?” I demand.

“She eventually confided in me that she was afraid of him. He would do things sexually that freaked her out. He started to hit her on a regular basis. He was a perfect gentleman in front of people, the usual behavior of an abuser. I didn’t like that Marie was going into the case with false information. I pulled her when I learned of the extent of the abuse. It was too dangerous.”

“What happened with him?” Blue asks.

“I don’t know. I assumed the cops took care of it as I turned it over to them.”

“So this guy abuses women. You turned him over to the cops. He could be extremely angry,” I say.

“I suppose, but Maire only followed him for two days before the girlfriend admitted her circumstances to me. She initially hired us, claiming she was afraid he was cheating. She had hoped we would discover the abuse without her admitting it. She was terrified to talk.”

“He was hassled by the cops. I’m sure he was capable of finding out who was looking into him. Marie was the one that set everything in motion,” Ryker says.

“Maybe. I can call a cop friend and ask about Samuel,” he says, pulling out his phone.

“His name is Samuel?” I ask urgently.

“Yeah. Why?”

“Marie spoke with her mom. She told her that a man from her school had come to their house asking for Marie’s phone number. They were having a school reunion,” I say. “His name was Sammy. Shit, that’s who it is. Call your cop friend and find out what he knows. If he doesn’t want to talk, I’ll make him.”

“Right,” Quinn says while taking out his phone.

“There’s an address on here,” Jax says.

“Where?” I ask.

“It’s not far,” he replies.

“Do you think it would be that easy?” River asks suspiciously.

“Fuck, isn’t it about time something is?” Logan says, joining in for the first time.

“It would be a nice change,” River says dryly.

“Give it to me.” James stands up. “I’ll look it up and see if I can get some information on it.”

“We need to go now,” I say impatiently.

“Bash, we have to be sure. We can’t go into someone’s home with our teeth gleaming, especially if they are human. We have to be smart,” Ryker says.
