I know he’s right, but I can’t wait much longer. “Fine,” I say through gritted teeth. My demon is pounding on my skull, eager to get out to hurt our mate’s tormentor.

Quinn comes back into the office. “He said they had to let him go. The girlfriend disappeared, and they had no evidence of the abuse without her.” He pauses. “There’s more,” he says hesitantly.

“Say it,” I growl.

“Since then, they found out his parents were killed under mysterious circumstances. They found them buried in the backyard. They’ve been trying to find him ever since with no luck.”

I feel the eyes watching me, afraid of my reaction. “Did they go to the address you have on file?” I ask, focused.

“Yes, but the man that answered doesn’t look like the son of the dead parents. They didn’t even question him,” Quinn says.

“What a fucking joke.” I glare. “Did they ever think that he could have changed his appearance?” I ask in disgust.

“Apparently not,” River says.

“It’s him.” I grab the file off the desk. “This man has her. He has had her for two days, and I’m not waiting anymore.” I step to Ryker. “I know it’s him—my gut is telling me.”

“Let’s go get her then,” Ryker says.

“I go in first. I want him alive. He deserves so much more than a quick death,” I say. I motion to Ryker to step aside to talk and wait for the others to leave. “If she is dead–” I start.

“Bash, no,” Ryker denies.

“If she is, you have to do what you have to. You have to protect everyone that I may kill after that. I will lose all control; you know that,” I say softly.

“She will be alive,” he says.

“Ryker, please,” I urge. “If she isn’t.”

“I will protect the others.” He grinds his teeth over the words. “It won’t come to that.”

“We’ll see,” I say sadly. I leave my humanity in that room and walk out the door. My gut tells me she is alive, but my demon will be out permanently if she isn’t. There will be no reasoning with me or saving me if my mate is dead. Hell will be released on the world if that is the case.

One way or another, I’m coming for my mate, and God forbid anyone stands in my way.

Chapter Nineteen

Marie

The smell of blood is thick in the air. I hear cursing beside the bed. I was hoping all that happened had been a horrible dream, but when my eyes flutter open, I see Sammy’s head bend over my leg. My mind is fuzzy, like I’m underwater. I can’t move my arms or my legs—he tied me again. My legs are numb. I try to stretch them, but the message from my brain evaporates. My vision is blurry, and I have to blink several times to focus. I grimace when I shake my head, not understanding the view in front of me.

Sammy is wringing out a towel into a bowl of water—the water is red. I look from him to my leg, only to see blood covering it. My breathing speeds up. I remember hearing the gun go off. He shot me. I have a gunshot wound. Chills wrack my body, and I start shaking. How is it possible to not feel it? Worse than seeing the blood, my pants are gone. He took them off when I was passed out, so I’m in my shirt and underwear.

“This is all your fault,” he accuses. “If you would have gotten back in the bed when you were told.”

“You shot me,” I state, staring stupidly at the blood.

“Of course I did.” He slaps the rag on my leg, causing me to jump.

“Why doesn’t it hurt?” I ask.

“I gave you some drugs for the pain,” he explains. “You’re lucky that I didn’t shoot you in the head, but I’m not done with you yet.”

“Why?” I ask, exasperated.

“Why not? I want you. I took you.”

“Sammy, you know nothing about me.” I can’t believe this is happening. It’s something out of a movie. It’s not lost on me that I’m talking calmly to my kidnapper while he cleans the wound he gave me.
