My brows furrow. “Youbetrayedme. There’s no coming back from that!”

“You can always go back when you don’t have a fucking choice,” he hisses in my face. “I will make it up to you, but you’re not getting away from me.”

“You’re insane,” I whimper as his fingers dig deeper, pouting my lips.

“Yeah,” he growls. “Say that again, so it truly sinks in.”

“Xi,” someone calls behind him. “Let her go.” I recognize Zara’s voice even though I can’t see her. Xi’s strong body is obstructing my view.

He doesn’t let me go. His intense stare is on me, silently telling me this isn’t over.

“Xi,” Zara repeats as a hand grabs his shoulder. “We’ve got angry Kings all around the warehouse. Keep her safe and let her go.”

Angry Kings all around the warehouse.

That’s their life. Two gangs barely co-existing in their broken side of the city. Always teetering on the edge of a full-on battle. They fight in a ring, cheering from two sides of the same warehouse. They plot silently to take the other crew down.

They use innocent women to do their bidding.

This man is so,sodeep into the war between the Kings and NSC that my chest constricts at the realization that I never stood a chance. If it’s between me or his gang, Xi will always choose them.

He releases me, but just as I’m about to step to the side, his hand slams on the wall next to my face. “I’m letting you go,” he says low. “But I’m notletting. You. Go.Do you understand?”

I feel myself trembling. It’s the need to cry, the betrayal. His words are clear; I can’t escape him. Except he’s wrong. I’m not letting him back into my life.

“Move your hand,” I say with a coldness that brings goosebumps to my skin. “Now.”

His arm drops, and I run through the hallways without looking back.

I don’t take a breath until I’m back in the parking lot. I wipe the tears as they come and finally slow down my run. How could I be so stupid? The man I have been wholly falling for is part of a gang. He was using me.

Slowly, I lose the crowd gathering in the lot. It’s only when I’m walking down the street that someone calls my name. I turn around to see Elliot and Ethan coming my way.

“Did you enjoy the fight?” Elliot asks as they both stop in front of me.

I wipe my tears and shake my head. “Why did you invite me here tonight?”

“What’s wrong?” he says as his light brows draw together. “Did he not want you here?”

“He…no, he didn’t want me here at all.”

“Damn,” Elliot runs a hand through his blond hair. “Do you know what that means?”

“No,” I sniffle. “I don’t.”

“That means he cares about you.” His voice is different now. Ominous.

“W-what?” I stutter, completely confused. My brain is foggy from tonight's revelations, my heart is broken, and I’m unsure what this is all about.

Then something strikes me just as Ethan moves to step behind me. I’m too late, of course. Too late, too naïve, too credulous. As always.

If only I’d remembered a few seconds before now that Xi’s tattoo showed he belongs to NSC, and I know for a fact that Elliot and Ethan are Kings’ crew.

Meaning they’re total enemies.

Elliot smiles brightly at me, like my realization is written on my face. I take a step back, only for Ethan to wrap a hand around my throat from behind.

“And do you know what it means if he cares about you?” Elliot sneers.
