“Oh my God,” Peach cheers. “My baby is finally growing a backbone.”

Yeah, because of the man who broke my heart, I don’t say.

“Anyway, Wren and I aren’t a thing. Period.”

“Or so you say,” Ella jumps back in. “But if I learn that you have seen his penis and not shared the juicy details with us, I’m going to be so mad, Peach.Somad. The man is a god, and we deserve to know what a god’s penis looks like.”

“Please stop saying penis,” I groan.

“What’s wrong with the word penis?”

“It’s weird,” Peach agrees with me. “Just stop saying it.”

“Do you prefer cock?”

“Yeah,” Peach answers casually.

My fingers come to press my temple. “Nope. I beg you two to just stop.”

“Dick,” Ella says in a fake sultry voice.

“Hard shaft,” Peach adds, imitating her as they both stare at me from across the table.

“Ding-a-ling,” the other squeaks as she tries to keep her giggles down.

“I hate you both,” I whine as my head falls against my notebook.

“God, you’re such a saint,” Peach laughs. “Are you sure you’ve seen Xi’s love plunger?”

“Love plunger?” I choke as my head snaps back up. “You guys are going to make me puke.”

They both explode into laughter as I shake my head at them, unimpressed.

“Oh my God,” Ella gasps. “I know what I’m going to do.” She points at me. “You’re going to invite Xi to the party…”

“What?”

“…and you’re going to tell him to bring a friend. Set me up on a blind date or something.”

I freeze, mouth open for a few seconds. “Oh, I’m sorry, El’s. Xi…he, um, he can’t come. I already offered.”

“Aw,” she pouts. “That’s so unfortunate. I guess I’m going to be the single ex, then.”

“I’ll ask him again,” I lie. “And see if he wants to bring a friend. But I really can’t promise anything.”

“Thank you. You’re the best.”

I feel sick lying to my friends, but I’m nursing a heartbreak, and I don’t need their pity or life lessons right now. No, I need to take back control.

“Let’s go home and get ready,” Peach says excitedly. “I need a fucking drink.”

My two friends start packing their stuff while I look at my untouched work. “You guys go. I barely did anything. I’ll stay another hour.”

In the end, I stay more than two hours before I’m finally caught up on my work. It’s dark outside by the time I exit the library. I’m not worried. The campus is well-lit and always alive with many students. I can walk back to Xi Ep easily.

As soon as I pass the library door, I feel someone’s gaze on me. In the shadow near the entrance, some girl is smoking and watching me. I don’t recognize her until she steps into the light.

Zara walks toward me.
