“We’re pledging by midnight, and that’s all I care about.” Ella smiles as she picks up the book she’s reading again. “No more kissing anyone’s ass.”

“I have to admit that’ll be nice.”

They both turn to me, expecting a reaction from me too. “Agreed.” My eyes dart down to my phone. “I think I need a night out,” I sigh.

“How’s Don Juan?” Peach asks.

I haven’t even told them that I learned the truth about Xi being part of NSC. I can’t imagine admitting he’s been using me to get to my dad. That I was just a means to an end. Peach loathes the guy, and I don’t need to put oil on the fire. Ella would go into protection mode and not leave my side.

I just want things to become simpler.

A small smile pulls at the corner of my mouth. Things will be better soon. I know it.

Ella grabs her phone, reads a text, and lets out a long huff. “I am so confused as to why my dad insists on having his birthday party at your house,” she tells me.

I shrug my shoulders. “What’s wrong with our house?”

“I wanted some neutral grounds so I could invite anyone I want,” she admits.

“Ella, ninety-five percent of Stoneview will be at that party. It’s not a party anymore, it’s a festival. Who could you possibly want to invite that’s not already on the list?” Peach mocks her.

“I don’t know!” she defends. “Some cool people and not just Stoneview’s finest. This is going to be the most boring festival in history. I want to have fun. Sexy fun.”

“It’s your dad’s birthday,” I mumble, reading over Xi’s last text again. This is too distracting. “You can’t have sexy fun at your dad’s birthday.”

“Luke is inviting all his friends like it’shisbirthday,” she groans. “Chris is going to be there.”

Peach’s eyes light up, and she sits straighter in her chair. “And Rose? Is Rose White going to be there?”

Ella rolls her eyes. “Yes, Peach. Rose is going to be there.”

A dreamy smile spreads on our best friend’s face. “God, she’s so hot.”

“And taken,” Ella snorts. “Sotaken.”

“I missed my chance when we were in high school. She was in her total hoe phase. That’swhen I should have shot my shot.”

“Can we circle back to my problem for a second?” she huffs.

“Huh?” Peach seems to come back to reality. “Yeah, sorry. Chris.”

“He’s going to come with his girlfriend. I don’t want to be the loser who’s not seeing someone when my ex is coming to my dad’sbirthday with practically a top model.”

“You know what she looks like?” I question in surprise.

“Yes, of course, I know what she looks like. Who doesn’t check their ex’s current girlfriend?”

Peach and I eye each other. “Everyone?” Peach says as she tilts her head.

“Chester doesn’t have a girlfriend,” she says as if accusing me. “And you don’t have an ex, just countless one-night stands and a man at your feet.”

“Wren and me are not a thing.” Peach’s eyes narrow into slits.

“Wren andI,” I mumble to myself.

“No one likes it when you do that, Alex,” Peach huffs.

“Speak properly, then,” I say, still looking at my phone.
