“Elisabeth.”

The one holding my driver's license laughs again, knowing I purposely didn’t say my last name. I’m delaying the inevitable. “Yeah,” he nods. His eyes drop to the plastic card in his hand. “Elisabeth AlexandraDelacroix.”

He butchers my last name. Pronouncing the ‘x’.Delacroyx, like the La Croix drink, instead ofDelakwa. It doesn’t matter. Either way, the effect is the same.

I look at the man next to me in a panic. I can already tell he’s the leader of the two. “As in Senator Delacroix?” He pronounces it perfectly, surprising me.

“Yep. I can confirm he’s in all the family pictures. Just him, his wife, and lovely Elisabeth here.”

I haven’t gone by my first name in forever. I’m so used to being called Alexandra that Elisabeth feels foreign to me.

“Man.” The guy with my driver's license smiles. “You know what that means, right?”

The one who’s been with me since the beginning brings an index finger to my cheek, tracing the outline of my jaw with his knuckle. The soft gesture stops when he wraps his entire hand around my jaw and pulls my face so I’m staring up at him.

“Yes,” he says calmly. With his other hand, he puts his gun in the back of his jeans. “It means we’re going to get a hefty ransom for Elisabeth.”

The entire weight of my body drops into my stomach, and I feel the blood draining from my face.

“No!” I yell as I pull away from him. Then I start to writhe, my wrists burning as I fall onto my mattress and attempt to crawl away.

“Tell the others to get the car ready. She’s coming home with us.”

The others? How many people are in my house?

I watch the guy with my driver's license leave my room as I try to roll onto the floor so I can get up and run away.

“Come here.” A hand clasps around my ankle, and I’m pulled back to the other side of the bed. The movement makes my nightie run up to my hips. Despite wearing something sexy for Chester, it’s not like he saw underneath it while we were on FaceTime, I still have on some cotton panties. How glad I am of that as I’m being dragged on the mattress. At least there’s some protection from his eyes.

“Help!” I scream even though it’s futile. The closest neighbor is a ten-minute walk away. We like our privacy in Stoneview; no one can hear me from here.

But he doesn’t know that, and it angers him.

“Shut the fuck up,” he hisses. He’s right on me, and after a shift in the air, a hand crashes against my ass.

I shriek as I feel him climb on top of me.

I’m not scared of the gun anymore. He won’t kill me now that he knows he can get millions out of me.

But I am terrified of all the other things he could do.

“No. Please…please!” I tear the skin at my wrists from trying to escape the zip ties.

His jeans are harsh against my exposed skin and a wave of fear courses through my body. “Please, don’t hurt me…”

His hand is in my hair next, and he pulls harshly until my head snaps back. Before I can beg anymore, he shoves some material in my mouth. Some sort of cloth. He lets go of me, and I hear the telltale sound of tape being unrolled.

I shriek from being scared, the cloth in my mouth swallowing the sound. I try to push it out with my tongue, but I’m too late. Tape is plastered on my skin, wrapping around my head multiple times before he cuts it.

My voice is muted now, my cries for help impossible. He gets off me, grabs my hips and flips me around.

“I thought you were going to be a good girl for me, Elisabeth. I’m not happy with this behavior of yours.” The mockery in his voice makes it all worse.

I shake my head, my body trembling.

He grabs my phone on my bedside table and smiles. “Your daddy is going to have the call of his life.”

He puts my phone in the back pocket of his jeans and grabs me by the upper arm, pulling me up until I’m on my feet. “Come on. Time is money.”
