“Aww, thank you, Callister," I replied, genuinely touched by his gesture. “This is really sweet of you.”

"Whatever," he muttered, lighting another cigarette. The smoke smelled like grilled pineapples.

As much as he infuriated me, there was something undeniably magnetic about him—something that made me want to try my damnedest to figure him out.

One thing at a time.

One guy at a time.

For now...

"Is this where you think the sword is hidden?" I asked, tracing my finger over the 'X'.

"Perhaps," Callister replied noncommittally, blowing out a plume of golden smoke. "But be warned, Alice–that mark may not stay in one place for long. The map is...unstable. Unpredictable, much like everything else in this realm."

"Sounds about right," I said, folding up the map and slipping it into my other jacket pocket. As if anything in Wonderland could be straightforward.

“We should get going before it gets dark,” said Chess. We walked to the edge of the yard, finding an unpaved road that forked in three different directions.

“One more thing,” Callister called to us. I turned around and saw his cigarette was trapped in his lips while his strong arms were busy cradling one of the baby flamingoes.

“Yeah?” I asked, finding it impossible not to smile at him.

To my surprise, Callister actually smiled back.

Fine, fine.

So it wasn’t exactly a smile. But the corner of his mouth was definitely twitching in that direction.

“Watch out for the fuzzy pink bunnies.”

ChapterFour

ALICE

“What did Callister mean about the fuzzy pink bunnies?” I asked as Chess and I stepped into the fork in the road.

“He meant exactly what he said. Watch out for them.”

Chess furrowed his black brow as he studied each of the three roads sprawled out before us.

“There are some ground rules you must adhere to if we’re going to travel together.”

“Really?” I asked with a flirtatious grin. “You don’t strike me as the kind of guy who likes having rules.”

Chess turned to me, and the hunger in his eyes made my knees tremble.

“I don’t have many,” he said, caressing my cheek with a few fingers. Then he cleared his throat and became serious. “Firstly, do not eat or drink anything you come across in Wonderland.”

“Dude, I just ate brunch at your house,” I reminded him.

“That was different.”

“Why?”

“Because it was brunch at my house,” he said, not going into further detail. “Secondly, do as Callister said and beware of the fuzzy pink bunnies."
