I swallowed hard, trying to focus my thoughts, trying to remain calm. It wasn’t going to do any good to start screaming when I was trapped in a room with two powerful men who didn’t seem to be human at all.

"Where are Chess and Hatter?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.

The king shrugged.

“Probably wherever the Tweedles left them.”

Again, I furrowed my brow in confusion.

“The Tweedles?”

“His henchmen,” Callister answered before taking a long drag off his cherry cigarette. He gave one puff and a canvas of white smoke filled the space in front of him. He gave another, and a row of thick red stripes bled down the white smoke.

My heart pounded in my chest as I recognized the red and white stripes from the blanket in my dream. It hadn’t been a dream at all.

They’d taken me.

The King of Clubs had sent the Tweedles to kidnap me. I had no idea what had happened to Hatter and Chess, but I needed to find out. I couldn't shake the feeling that something was very, verywrong.

“Are they safe?” I asked, feeling my mouth go dry.

The King of Clubs chuckled softly, revealing a set of unnervingly sharp canine teeth.

"Don't worry about them right now, dear Alice."

His dismissive tone sent a shiver down my spine, and I felt my alarm growing. What had happened to my wicked boys? And why was I here with these two instead?

Then I remembered what else was missing.

Fuck.

Ohfuck!

"Looking for this?" he asked, a sinister smile playing on his lips.

Before I could demand answers, the King of Clubs reached down to his hip and drew out the Vorpal Sword. The gleaming blade seemed to hum with power as he lifted it up for me to see.

"Give that back!" I snapped, my heart racing.

But deep down, I knew I was in no position to make demands. What could I do against these two powerful men? And why did it feel like everything I'd been fighting for had just slipped through my fingers?

The King of Clubs merely grinned, his eyes gleaming with mischief as he sheathed the sword out of my sight.

“I’ll give it back,” he said with a sly smile, “if you play your cards right.”

I narrowed my eyes at him, not wanting him to see how much he pissed me off and failing miserably.

“Fine. What do I have to do to get my sword back and get out of here?”

A cunning smile spread across the king’s mouth. He held out his hand of cards to me, keeping the black and gold pattern facing me so I couldn’t tell one from the other.

“Pick a card, then put it back. If I guess which one it is, then you stay until I say otherwise. If Idon’tguess the correct card, then you can take your precious sword and walk right out of here. Deal?”

“Sure,” I nodded, glancing at the cards. There were a lot of them. At least twenty. I liked those odds.

“Deal?” he repeated, his tone more serious this time.

“Yeah, deal,” I said, rolling my eyes at him. He ignored it and gave me a smug smile. That didn’t surprise me at all, given that he was wearing a pinky ring.
