“Pick a card.”

I hemmed and hawed for a few seconds, then teased one out of his grasp.

“Look at it without showing me. Then put it back.”

When I looked at my card, I snorted.

It was the King of Clubs.

Of course it was.

I slipped it between two of the cards and watched him shuffle them in his skilled fingers. He made them dance between his long digits like a magician. I’d never really cared for card tricks, but I had to admit, he was entertaining.

“Ready for me to guess which one is your card?”

“Bring it on,” I dared, crossing my arms over my chest.

He lifted the very first card on top of the deck and showed it to me.

“This is your card.”

My eyes widened and my jaw fell.

It was the King of Clubs.

“How did you...I don’t understand how you...”

A low, wicked laugh rumbled through his chest as he fanned out all of the cards and let me see them for myself.

What.

The.

Actual.

FUCK?

They wereallthe King of Clubs!

“That’s not fair!” I screamed at him. “You asshole! I never had a chance of leaving, did I? That’s not fair at all!”

“I don’t play fair, Alice,” said the King of Clubs as he returned to the sofa and resumed his game with Callister.

“I play towin.”
