Yet it definitely was.

They were hearts. I could only hope that they’d been removed after the poor soul was beheaded, and not before.

"Stay quiet and observe," I instructed Hatter as he took his place among the guards lining the back wall. He blended in seamlessly, his eyes scanning the room for any sign of our friend.

"Where is that damned caterpillar?" I muttered under my breath, my frustration building as the minutes ticked by. But I couldn't risk exposing us until I was certain Callister was here.Patience, Chess, I reminded myself, even as every fiber of my being screamed at me to tear this wretched place apart.

I floated through the air undetected, scanning the voices of the people in the room, hoping for gossip or any useful information.

Nothing.

I drifted back to the wall where I’d left my friend.

"Find him yet?" Hatter whispered, his voice barely audible over the din of the throne room.

“No,” I replied, gritting my teeth. "But he has to be here somewhere. I can smell him.”

"Focus, Chess," Hatter urged, his tone laced with concern. "We can't afford to make a single mistake."

"Trust me, I know," I snapped, my patience wearing thin.

Then, at last, I caught another whiff of Callister's scent—it was faint but unmistakable. Relief surged through me, quickly followed by a renewed sense of urgency.

"Over there," I murmured, spotting Callister bound and awaiting interrogation. Hatter took his place along the back wall, blending in seamlessly with the other guards as he observed in silence.

From my invisible vantage point, I studied the room, my heart pounding with trepidation. We had found Callister, but our mission was far from over. We still needed to free him from the clutches of the Red Queen and ensure Alice's safety.

"Chess," Hatter whispered urgently, his voice barely audible. "We need a plan!”

"We'll wait for the right moment," I replied, my mind racing with possibilities. "Then we strike. I’ll give you a sign.”

“What’s the sign?”

“You’ll know it when you see it.”

Hatter cast me a serious frown.

“Can it be purple?”

“What?”

Hatter rolled his eyes at me. Meanwhile, I wanted to choke him for being such an infuriating fae.

“If I don’t know what the sign is going to be, can you at least make it purple so I know it’s meant for me?”

“Yes,” I hissed through clenched teeth. “I’ll make it purple so you know it’s for you.”

I promptly floated away before I was tempted to throttle him. While Hatter’s particular brand of madness was endearing most of the time, this was not one of them.

But he was all I had right now. No matter what it took, we would save Callister and protect Alice.

Wonderland's future depended on it.

The Red Queen entered the throne room, and even in my invisible state, I could feel the weight of her presence. Her beauty was both enchanting and terrifying, a deadly combination that left many trembling in her wake. She wore a provocative, skin-tight red gown with a plunging neckline that accentuated her full breasts, and slits on either side that revealed her long legs. Her ruby red hair cascaded down her back like a waterfall of blood, and her sharp, pointy blood-red nails threatened to pierce through anyone who dared to defy her.

As she moved, the gold ring on her finger captured the light, casting sinister glimmers across the room. Every step she took exuded confidence and power, while her facial expressions oscillated between cruel amusement and unbridled fury.

She used to be so beautiful, so absolutely stunning. Now her face was a mask of cold fury, and her eyes burned with a barely contained rage. I watched as she settled onto her throne, a predatory smile playing on her lips.
