But his eyes were exactly the same.

Dark.

Restrained.

Calculating.

With an air of indifference, he tucked his loose strands of hair back into place and picked up his cards from the table. I watched in disbelief as he and Callister resumed their card game as if nothing out of the ordinary had just happened.

“You’re in my club...The Rabbit Hole.” He paused to reveal a wicked smile. “It’s where all the bad bunnies of Wonderland come to play.”

He watched as Callister picked up a card from the table, frowned at it, then drew another one from the deck. Then another.

“As far as kidnapping you,” Ransom went on, “I didn’t have much of a choice once the Red Queen learned that you’ve arrived in Wonderland. There’s been a bounty on your head since before you were born. She won’t stop searching for you until she has your head on a spike in her rose garden.”

“I was safe with Hatter and Chess,” I insisted. My wrists were still bound behind my back, and I was still completely naked, tits out, and I was positive that I’d already ruined his couch, but that didn’t stop me from trying to act dignified. “You should’ve seen what they did to the Red Queen’s soldiers!”

A low rumble came out of Ransom’s chest.

“I know Chess very well. I imagine he tore those soldiers to shreds.”

“If you know him so well, then how could you betray him?” I snapped at Ransom before unleashing my anger onto Callister. “Andyou! How could you betray them? Some friend you are! I didn’t think you would stoop so low, but I guess I shouldn’t be surprised since you’re a fuckingwormshifter!”

Callister’s jaw feathered and his mouth twisted into a vicious sneer. He looked like he wanted to punch me.

"I did it to keep them safe,” he growled through clenched teeth. “They’re the closest thing I have to brothers. Be angry all you want, but I willnotlisten to a spoiled little whore question my loyalty to them!”

“If you’re so loyal, then why are you working with this asshole to kidnap me and steal the Vorpal Sword?” I demanded. “That’s not part of the plan to save Wonderland!”

Callister’s jaw tightened so hard I half expected his teeth to crumble. His gaze flickered over to the king’s.

“Are you going to just sit there and let her call you an asshole?”

Ransom shrugged.

“She’s not wrong.”

Then he turned his attention to me.

“Alice, if you’re going to defeat the Red Queen and her Jabberwocky, you must choose your allies with more care. Wonderland is a treacherous place. Not everyone can be trusted to look out for your best interests.”

“Hatter and Chess were looking out for me just fine,” I insisted.

Ransom traced a warm finger down my cheek, along my collarbone, and between my breasts. Unable to push his hand away, I watched as his touch conjured a trail of goosebumps in its wake. My nipples hardened from the skillful sensation of his touch.

“They may have been looking out for you, but you weren’t looking out for them at all,” he observed, sincerity lacing his words. “If the Red Queen suspects that either of them knows where you are and they don’t tell her, it’s off with their heads. I can’t have that happening to my friends. Not on my watch.”

“Still doubt my loyalty now?” Callister deadpanned in between puffs of pink smoke. There was something undeniably alluring about the darkness within him, a raw vulnerability that tugged at my own desires.

“No,” I admitted, “but you could’ve said something to me instead of having me kidnapped.”

Callister’s handsome face twisted into a haughty frown.

“Ididsay something to you! I said you’re not ready to fight the Red Queen. I don’t think you have what it takes to defeat her.”

"Quite frankly, neither do I,” Ransom murmured, his voice suddenly close to my ear.

He examined his cards and drew from the deck, then elegantly fanned them out and laid them on the table.
