His eyes land on Silla and then myself, and his feet begin taking him toward us.

“You hollered?” the Warden asks with a slight smirk. There’s no worry in his eyes, his body relaxed. Why is everyone able to lie so easily to me?

They have to be, or I’m losing my touch and my mind.

“Silla and I are going on a field trip to the greenhouse,” I say matter of factly. I’ve already told her I’m taking her, so I am. The Warden gets small frown lines between his eyes as he tries to figure out why I’m telling him this. “Due to other unfortunate circumstances, we felt it would be best if we let someone know before I disappeared with her.”

At my explanation, he nods. “Are you going under duress, Silla? I see he’s dragging you about.”

The Warden sounds a bit amused, and I glance down at where my hand connects her to me.

“No. I would love to be outside for a bit, though,” Silla says, and the yearning in her voice makes me turn to her.

“Is it really so hard for you to be here?” I ask, intent on finding out the reason for her claustrophobia.

She drops her eyes, her lashes hiding her windows of truth. “Sometimes,” Silla mumbles.

“We need to make sure you get outside more,” the Warden rumbles. There’s honest worry in his eyes for her, but I still ask myself if it’s beyond what he would feel for any of his inmates.

The man’s heart is huge, and he cares too much.

Silla shrugs, making me believe her needs are rarely met. Deciding to see how I can change that, I say, “Will you be sure to let Isaac know I’m absconding with Silla? I don’t want to have to hurry back because he’s wearing a hole in the tiles.”

The Warden snorts, shaking his head. “Isaac will still be doing that because she’s with you. Until you prove she’s completely safe with you, there will be issues,” he says.

And yet… “Why are you so blasé about this if you don’t think Silla is safe with me?” I ask.

Her head pops up as she notices that I say her name more, her nose wrinkled in thought.

“Isaac and I will remove your head from your body if there’s one hair in the wrong place, and no one will ever find you,” the Warden says smoothly, making my lips twitch.

It seems there’s more than meets the eye here after all. Interesting.

Silla’s lips part to say something, and then close as her mouth twists.

“Say it,” the Warden insists, his finger pushing her chin up to look at him.

“The violence is intriguing and sexy,” Silla says with the sexiest smirk.

Damn. Fuck. Shit. I’m in trouble.

“Remember that later,” the Warden growls under his breath, and fuck if my dick doesn’t twitch.

Silla shivers, inclining her head like the nobility that she is.

“Till later then, Sir,” she murmurs, walking with me.

The greenhouse is off one of the employee service entrances, at the back of the building. Due to being so far from the main cities, the Warden came up with a plan to always have fresh fruit and vegetables. The kitchen staff take care of it, along with a few of the employees that enjoy gardening.

The staff for the most part don’t leave either, and it’s in our best interest not to starve.

The greenhouse is also where the twins and I cultivate the plants that we need for our poison. We’ve created new potions, sleeping tonics, and more natural medication for the infirmary as well.

We believe in pulling our weight, being so imbued into the fabric of this facility, that no one will want us to leave.

Silla follows me without question, her eyes wide with wonder as she walks inside. The space is huge, and I watch her muscles loosen from the anxiety that I didn’t realize until now is always present.

“How long have you been afraid of small spaces?” I ask her, picking up the remote control for the three skylights that open in the greenhouse.
