“Why not?” I shrugged.

His long fingers pulled his bushy brows as he shook his head, trying to make sense of my suggestion. Scoffing, he sniggered sarcastically, a failed attempt to gain control of his movement and his emotions. I watched as he continued to unveil the pain that rested deep within.

“Nah,” he expressed. “N-Nah.” Choking, he continued to shake his head from side to side.

“Mason Maurice Domino.”

“Nay,” he pled.

“It’s perfect, Milo.”

“It… Nay, nah. I’ll think of something. I promise.”

“Mason Maurice Domino,” I repeated.

Though a million other names had flowed through my head and matched well with my son’s name, there was something special about Maurice and it wouldn’t allow me to fall in love with any other combination.

“You serious?”

I nodded.

He grew quiet, tracing the pendant on his necklace, one that the four of them shared. Malachi. Makai. Mercer. Milo. It was a diamond-studded prayer hand with the letter M hanging on rosary beads.

“You’d do that?”

“Yes. I would. Why not?”

“Thank you,” he sighed. “Thank you.”

“Of course.”

A smile parted his lips as pride sparked in his eyes. “Thank you, Nay.”

“Please. Don’t. I just thought I’d help ease your worries and give you something to remember your father by. Our son will be honored to carry his name. I’m certain.”

“I didn’t even consider it.”

“I know.”

He was forever running from the pain that accompanied thoughts of his parents and their demise.

“Mason Maurice Domino.”

“Yes,” I confirmed.

“Not the first choice, but—”

“The best choice.”

Of course I would’ve chosen something fun and mysterious for Mason’s middle name but nothing suited better than the name we’d just decided on. It was perfect. I loved it for Mason and I loved it for Milo.

“Nay… what are we doing, my love?”

“Milo,” I groaned.

“Tell me because I don’t fucking know. I feel all of this shit for you and trying to keep it under wraps has got me ready to lose my fucking mind.”

“I thought I wanted something between us, wanted more, you know. And I almost made the mistake of gaining it. But over the last week, I realized it’s not really what I need. It doesn’t matter that my heart is telling me to go for it. My head knows it’s the dumbest fucking decision I could make, especially right now.”
