Zane. Seeing his name immediately reminded me of the second round of drinks we’d shared at the same bar, a total coincidence. This time, however, I didn’t mind accepting the food he offered. With the same chair between us, we dined, laughed, and ended our nights with full bellies.

What’s good?

Hi.

The gray bubbles appeared, disappeared, and then appeared again as he considered a follow up.

You crossed my mind. I feel like I miss your company. I could be tripping but I doubt it.

I gnawed on the flesh of my bottom lip, wondering how to respond. I could feel my cheek sharpen at the peaks as a smile split my face. It wasn’t until the music stopped and I heard Milo’s voice that I snapped out of it and back into reality.

“Who we texting?” he asked, peeking over at my screen.

I snatched it out of eye range, pressing the phone against my chest, eventually.

“We?”

“Yeah.”

“Milo, you don’t pay the bill on my phone so you have no business worrying about who I am texting,” I told him, finding his inquiry comical.

“What’s so fucking funny?” he wondered.

“You. Turn the music up.”

“Aight. Get you and some nigga fucked up.”

“Please drive!” I laughed, pointing toward the green light.

He hiked the volume on the stereo again. I locked my phone, deciding against texting Zane in his presence. He could wait until I was alone and in the comfort of my home.

FIVE

“Where’s the baby?”Aussie whispered in my ear as if she was sharing news with me that others weren’t privy to.

“You know that everyone knows I have a baby on the way, right, Aussie?”

“I don’t really care, Uncle Milo,” she sassed.

“Oh. Well, alright, then. The baby is still in Nature’s tummy.”

“He’s taking so long,” she fussed, folding her arms in front of her.

“I agree.”

“Maz took a long time.”

“Yes. Babies take nearly ten months to make it out.”

“That’s almost twelve months, like a full calendar year.”

“What don’t you know, Aussie?”

“Mandarin, but Mommy says she’s going to hire a tutor.”

“I believe it.” Nodding, I shifted in my seat, facing the woman in question.

Aeir’s brown skin with hints of orange reminded me of the woman I’d watched my brother fall in love with when we were just kids. Though I didn’t think it could get any better than Anna, somehow, he’d proven me wrong. Aeir was the updated, upgraded version of a woman that was already perfect. That spoke volumes about her and her position in Malachi’s life. His happiness allowed me to rest easily each night.
