“What do you mean, lighten up? A baby is coming!”

“A baby is coming, but the baby’s mother is a birth specialist. You can relax.”

“I can’t.”

Shaking my head, I braced for impact. The pressure that budded in my vagina coupled with the contractions, pushing was inevitable. The time was near. I felt the need to bear down and begin the process.

“I need to start pushing, Shayla. Please, come around this way and observe what’s happening below. I can’t see over my belly. I can only feel.”

My phone vibrated in the distance. Preoccupied with the task at hand, neither Shayla nor I budged. I bored down, sinking my teeth into my lip as I pushed.

“One. Two. Three. Four. Five.” I counted out loud.

The phone began vibrating again, breaking my concentration.

“It’s Milo,” I shrieked. The potency of the pain I felt was incomparable to anything I’d ever experienced.

“Should I ge—”

“No. I need you right here.”

With each contraction that followed, I continued to push. On the sixth push, there was progress. From the look of terror on Shayla’s face, I knew exactly what was happening down below. Crowning was taking place.

“Nature! Nature. Wait. Hold up. Wait.”

Jumping back, nearly out of the water completely, she pointed.

“What the fuck, Nature? It’s a baby. He’s right there.”

“Yes,” I belted, finding it hard to keep a straight face as I watched Shayla’s eyes swell on her face. “That’s the point of all of this, Shayla.”

“Friend, it’s a whole baby right there. You can’t possibly get that out of you. It’s huge.”

I was beginning to think that calling Shayla was a mistake. She was unable to focus and she was making me laugh uncontrollably when I needed to push to avoid vaginal tearing and the need for repair.

“Sh—Ughhhhh! Shayla. Get it toget—Oh my God!”

I was unable to fully articulate my thoughts or feelings. The next contraction wouldn’t allow it. I counted down from ten, determined to end my suffering at once.

“Ten. Nine. Eight.”

“Oh shit, Nature. A whole hea—a head. Nature,” Shayla choked.

“Seven. Six.”

“Five.”

My heart stopped at the sound of his voice, forcing my eyes open. I watched as he politely moved Shayla aside as he pulled a pair of gloves over his hands.

“Keep going, Nay. You got this. He’s right there. I can see his big ass head.”

His encouragement gave me a boost of strength in the nick of time. I closed my eyes, accepting his hand as he stepped inside the tub.

“Four. Three. He’s almost here. Keep pushing, Mommas. Keep pushing. Two. On—”

At that moment, Milo’s hand fell as he rushed to catch our son. Into his arms and out of the water, Mason began wailing immediately, uprooting a new level of emotions from me. A sunken chest and teary eyes welcomed my son into my hands. His wailing filled the entire bathroom, echoing in the distance, confirming his cleared airways and lung capacity.

“Hi.” I cried. “Hiiiii. Welcome home.”
