She cocked her head. “You’re hard again, Lucien.”

She flashed a smile and turned to sink into the bubble bath, making sure to give me a prime view of her just-fucked pussy as she bent. Making a mental note to spank her beautiful ass later for goading me, I adjusted myself and left the bedroom.

I paused in the kitchen as the faint sound of a car door slamming reached my ears. Eyes narrowed, I moved down the hall and drew the curtain aside. Marco’s car pulled out of the drive and onto the road, lights bobbing through the trees until they died away.

He was definitely going to meet up with his girlfriend. If memory served, they lived less than an hour away.

For a second, I considered calling him, but then I stopped short. No, this was good. This was life, part of having a family with the woman I loved.

If I had asked myself as a young man if I ever thought I would have a home, I would have said no. Without hesitating. But here I was, with a perfect wife and a houseful of sons.

All of these growing pains, they were a gift.

My throat felt oddly tight. I’d made it to the other side. Despite all the cards being stacked against me, I was happy because Olivia had looked beyond all my ice and scars and decided I was worth loving.

I ran a hand over my face. Fuck this, I hated feeling things. I let the curtain fall and strode back into the kitchen and found her favorite red wine and a set of glasses. As I moved through the dark, I could faintly hear Hugo’s TV running in his room on the far side of the house. I made a mental note to text him and tell him to keep it down as I kicked the bedroom door shut.

I stripped and slid into the tub with her and she snuggled back against my chest.

“Marco snuck out,” I said.

She sighed, letting her eyes fall shut. “He’s okay, Lucien, I’m sure he’s going to see Freja. He’s just young and that’s alright.”

I slid my forearm around her throat and she rested her chin on it.

“I know,” I said.

She let out the most contented, little sigh and I pressed a kiss to the top of her head.

“Thank you for loving me,” I said quietly. “I haven’t always been the easiest person to love, but you make it look effortless.”

She pressed a kiss to my wrist, her eyes still shut. She didn’t contradict me to tell me that I was easy to love. We both knew that wasn’t true.

I was the most difficult person in the world to love and she loved me anyway.

There was a long silence and I thought she’d fallen asleep, but then she shifted and cracked an eye. Our gazes met in the mirror and she offered me a sweet smile.

I kissed her head again, overwhelmed. I’d started out hoping that at least my violent, chaotic life would be short. Now when I held her in my arms, I hoped every moment stretched into a year and a year stretched into an eternity. No amount of time with her would ever be enough.

I stirred, sitting up. “Let me take you to bed.”

She was quiet as I dried her off and pulled on her silk slip. A long time ago I’d picked her up and carried her back to bed after a nightmare. Perhaps that had been one of the moments when I first realized I was falling for her.

I lifted her up. Her arms locked around my neck, clinging to me as I carried her out into the bedroom. Before I laid her down, I kissed her forehead. Slowly, taking the time to soak in the scent of her hair.

“My lovely Olivia,” I whispered. “Always and forever my queen.”

THE END
