Right. Okay. She was no longer a virgin.

She had given her virginity to three men.

Okay then.

She had given her virginity to three men called Kingston, Nolan, and Fletcher.

She had given her virginity to three men called Kingston, Nolan, and Fletcher, who just so happened to be her stepbrothers. As in her mom, Brenda had married their dad, Mickie. And for the last six years, her mom and Mickie thought they were one big, happy extended family.

When her phone rang, she scrambled to answer it. And instantly wished she had waited long enough to ignore it. Because it was her mother on the freaking phone. Too late.

“Hey, sweetie,” her mom said on the other side of the video call. “How’s the island? Are you getting a nice tan?”

“Hey, Mom,” she said, already thinking of ways to end the call. And no, no she hadn’t had the time to get a tan because she had been too busy losing her virginity to her… stepbrothers. With that thought came another. Would her mother be able to tell if her daughter had gotten laid for the first time… by her stepbrothers?

“Not yet. But I’m going now. I’ll talk to you later.”

“Oh, wait, Mickie wants to say hi.”

Oh sure. Why wouldn’t she want to speak to Mickie to say hi—it wasn’t as if she hadn’t slept with his sons—all three of them—and they also happened to be her stepbrothers. And that she had brought shame to the family because she had come so many times last night that she lost count, and the big happy family Mickie thought he was getting when he married her mom was now tainted and debauched, and it was all because of her.

Of course, she wanted to say hi to him.

“Hello, there kiddo. You doing okay? Seen your stepbrothers?”

“Err... no, I actually haven’t seen them at all. Are they here? I didn’t even know they came to weddings. Did not know that at all.” If she didn’t hang up, the next thing out of her mouth would be a confession to make up for her blatant lies. “Have a great day, Mickie. It’s breakfast time, and I’m starved. Bye, Mom, I love you.”

Drained of all her strength, she sagged back into the bed. Hell was keeping her stake nice and warm for her when she arrived. Not long now.

When her phone rang again, she made sure to see who it was first.

She sat up immediately.

“Greg. Where are you?”

“I’m at the airport. I’m heading home.”

“What? But the wedding is tomorrow—”

“Look, Holly. I have to tell you something.”

The Greg she knew never sounded this serious in all the time she had known him.

“What’s wrong? You can tell me anything, Greg. I’m your friend.”

“I was hoping we would be something more. I know I had a chance in high school, but I guess I always thought I would never be enough for you. I did love you, Holly.”

“Greg… I…”

“You don’t have to say anything. But here’s what I want to say. As you know, I work for my Uncle Walt.”

“Yes, I do. I like your Uncle Walt. He’s very cool.”

“And he has a dark sense of humor too. A week ago, he called me in and told me he was retiring and was thinking of leaving the furniture company to me on the condition that I marry. You.”

“Say that again?”

“He was going to leave me his entire furniture company and all its subsidiaries if I got you to marry me by the end of this weekend.”
