“We have less than a few days left before you part for Braaka.” He utters the name of the cursed city I’m abandoning Arkøya for.

“We do,” is all I muster to reply.

“It will be a hard journey south. A fifteen-day journey by my count,” he continues to say.

“Hmm.” I nod.

“A queen shouldn’t make such a journey south without the proper protection,” he adds, his thumb brushing against my collarbone.

“Are you saying my men are unequipped to protect me?”

“I took four of them down before they even saw me coming. I’m not just saying that they are incompetent, I’m stating a fact.”

“Are you offering me your men?” I arch a brow.

“No, I’m offering yours,” he states evenly. “My army serves its queen in any capacity she desires.”

“I rejoice in the sentiment behind such an offer, but how would it look to both Teodoro and Atlas if I show up with soldiers that wear the green hydrangea seal on their vests?”

“Fuck Teodoro. I couldn’t give two fucks what he thinks.”

My forehead creases at the venom in his tone.

I know Levi and Teo never saw eye to eye, but why does Levi hate him so much? Anytime his name is uttered, Levi goes mad with rage. Much like he is about to now.

“Fine, forget Teodoro. What of Atlas, then? Will he not be insulted when he realizes that you do not trust him? For that is what I’ll be saying if I bring our men with me. And though you have refused to tell me what type of relationship you have with the rebel king, I know you care for him and the last thing you want to do is give him cause to mistrust your affection.”

“Fuck,” he mumbles under his breath. “I hate it when you’re right.”

“I’m always right, my king. That’s why I am queen.” I wink.

Levi’s foul mood lifts as he sways me in the water, left to right, creating little waves to tickle my skin.

“Fine. Don’t take any of my men. Brick will be pissed with me, though. I kind of already promised he’d accompany you south.”

I let out a laugh.

“Inessa would have had a fit if that happened. He’s enough of a nuisance as it is here. One can only imagine how bad he would get down south.”

“You’re saying to have a man’s love is bothersome?” Levi taunts, nibbling my earlobe.

I slap his back and pull away laughing.

“Are you saying that Brick is in love with Inessa? After all the rejection he’s gotten from her?” I continue to laugh.

“Yes, that’s what I’m telling you,” Levi confirms, quickly sobering me up.

“Wait… Brick is in love with Inessa?”

Levi nods with a smile.

“He doesn’t just want a good tumbling?”

Levi shakes his head.

“Lovelove?” I continue to interrogate, not believing what I’m hearing. “The true kind. Like what we have?”

The minute the words leave my mouth, Levi’s eyes turn two shades darker.
