“Whatever gave you that idea?” I ask sarcastically while maintaining my cold demeanor intact.

The queen of the north isn’t the only one who knows how to decrease the temperature in a room.

“You are still mad at me.” She thins her lips despondently.

I cross my arms over my chest and sneer.

“You’re the queen. What reason could I, a mere vassal, ever have to be upset with his queen?”

“Stop it, Teo. I know that you’re angry, and with good reason. I insulted you and your friend. You don’t have to be a jerk about it.”

“If this is your way of apologizing, then I don’t accept. Now please, Your Highness, I have much work to do and little time to console your frail ego.”

Her eyes widen in outrage at my response, but I don’t really give a fuck.

It still stings the way she just assumed that me and Cleo were involved when I have spent the last couple of weeks doing everything in my power to win her over. For her to think that I was in a relationship with someone and would still pursue her is fucking insulting.

She’s bound to Levi and that doesn’t stop you.

My nostrils flare at the thought but I quickly push it away.

Her thinking Cleo and I were together isn’t the only reason why I’m upset.

Katrina has been in Nas Laed long enough to see that we don’t play by the same rules as the other kingdoms do. I thought she understood that. I thought she accepted it.

But it looks like I was wrong.

And if she’s unable to accept my people’s beliefs and ways of being, then how could I ever expect her to accept me?

There is a long silence between us before I pull my gaze off hers and back to my ledgers.

Unfortunately for me, Katrina can’t seem to take the hint, and proceeds to walk over to where I’m sitting.

“You were right,” she announces, leaning against my desk.

“I’m right about a great number of things, Your Highness. You’re going to have to be more precise than that.”

She lets out a soft giggle, making my insides turn to mush.

“You were right about Cleo and Anya. There is something there between them.”

“I would have assumed you watching them fuck would have been sufficient for you to realize that.”

“Do you have to be so crude?” she balks.

“Do you have to be such a prude?” I snap back, lifting my head just enough to look at her face.

The corner of her lips curl in aggravation, but she doesn’t offer one of her witty replies.

But since she’s not moving an inch to leave either, I cross my arms over my chest and lean back in my seat.

“Okay, I’ll bite. How do you know the girls are together, aside from the obvious.”

“I did what any normal person does when they have doubts. I went directly to Anya last night and asked her.”

“And her response?”

Katrina’s nose scrunches.
