Everybody was on the dance floor, singing along as the group performed a cover of one of Gray’s old songs. Presley was loving it. She could tell from the glow on his face as he leaned into the mic and growled the words out. And the rest of the band was killing it, too.

Lapping up the adulation from the audience.

Grace’s phone buzzed against her hip and she pulled it out, surprised when she saw Michael’s name flash up.

Luckily, Sabrina was too busy dancing to notice.

It was nine-thirty here. Which made it two-thirty in the morning in London.

Poor Michael. He must be exhausted.

Surreptitiously, she slid the message open with her thumb, being sure to keep the screen only visible to her.

Can you talk?- M x

I’m on the dancefloor. Give me a minute and I’ll call you. Is everything okay? – G x

It’s fine. Or it will be once I hear your voice. – M x

Sabrina was dancing at the very front, only a few feet away from Presley. Grace was pretty sure she wouldn’t do anything stupid for a few minutes, so she turned and pushed her way through the crowd, smiling in apology every time her shoulder brushed somebody else’s.

Presley and Cassie were singing together, their voices making a sweet harmony. They sang of losing each other. Of never getting over the relationship they’d had.

She reached the door and pushed it, stepping out into the evening air. There were a few smokers outside – a few vapers, too – but she found somewhere quiet. The evening air was humid, curling around her body. Leaning against the brick wall at the side of the building, she pulled out her phone and hit Michael’s name.

“Hi.”

“Hi. You’re up late.”

“I just got back to my hotel room. We’ve agreed on a price.”

Her smile widened. “You have? Congratulations.”

“We still have to sign contracts, but we’re almost there. And I’ll be flying back on Monday.”

“I can’t wait.” She was grinning from ear to ear.

“I also saw my ex-wife.”

Her smile wavered. “Lainey?”

“Yeah.” He didn’t ask how she knew her name. Maybe he thought he’d told her before. “There’s nothing sinister. Richard told her I was in town. We talked for about five minutes and she left.”

“What did you talk about?”

“She wanted to know about you.”

Oh. “What did you tell her?”

“That I’m in love with you.”

She swallowed hard. “How did she take that?”

“I don’t know,” he said honestly. “I just wanted to tell you because I want to be honest with you.”

Okay then. She took a deep breath. “Did you feel anything when you saw her?”

“No.”
