“Good.”

He laughed softly. “I can’t wait to come home and see you,” he told her. “It’s all I’m thinking about.”

“It’s all I’m thinking about, too. I wish you were here.”

“So do I. More than you know. How’s the concert going?”

“They sound great. Like they’re really on the edge of something good.” She looked at her watch. “You should go to bed. Before you fall asleep standing.”

“Can I call you tomorrow?”

“Yes, please.”

“I can’t wait to see you. And we can stop all these damn secrets and lies.”

“I can’t wait either.”

“Send me a message when you get home tonight. So I know you and Sabrina got back safely,” he said, sounding tired.

“You’ll be asleep.”

“Yeah, but I’ll be awake at a stupid hour. And I’ll want to know you’re safe.”

“Okay, I’ll send you a message,” she promised.

“Good. I love you.” His voice was gruff again. “So fucking much.”

“I love you too,” she said softly. “Now get some sleep.”

ChapterTwenty-Three

“You okay?”Presley asked Grace. The gig was over and the band was sitting at the table with Grace and Sabrina. The bar had thinned out – it was nearly closing time. Grace was waiting for Sabrina to finish her third soda of the night and then they’d head home.

“I’m good. Just tired.” She bumped his shoulder with hers. “You were fabulous tonight. Reminded me of the old days.”

It had been fun growing up with Marley and Presley. The twins were a few years older than her, and they’d made up all the best games. Her mom had told her she used to toddle after them, begging them to wait for her.

And they had. Every time. They’d been so patient with her as a kid. When she’d arrived at high school freshman year, they’d been seniors and usually the age difference would have meant they wouldn’t be seen dead with her.

But not Marley and Presley. They’d put the word around that she was their cousin and everybody had to take care of her.

She loved them for that.

“You look happy,” she told Presley. “Is it good to be back with the band?”

He nodded, a smile playing at his lips. “Yeah, it really is.”

From the corner of her eye she could see Cassie and Marley laughing at something Sabrina had said. The smile on Presley’s lips wavered, but it wasn’t her place to say anything.

“So what’s happening with you?” Presley asked.

“What do you mean?” Grace gave him a confused glance.

“I mean this guy you were talking to outside when we were playing.”

“Who said I was talking to a guy?” she asked, her voice wary. She’d been alone, hadn’t she?

“I saw you on the phone through the window when we took a quick break,” Presley told her. “You had this stupid smile on your face. I kind of guessed the rest.”
