“You’re seeing somebody?” her dad asked. “Who?”

“Sorry,” her mom said to her, looking genuinely upset. “Maddie called earlier. She overheard Presley talking to Marley about it. I was going to ask you quietly.”

Grace let out a long breath. Why had she ever thought they could keep a secret in Hartson’s Creek?

“It’s not true, is it?” her dad asked.

Grace tried not to squirm. “I don’t want to talk about it.”

“Why not?” Her mom frowned.

“Please tell me it isn’t Ethan the asshole,” Scott said.

“It isn’t,” she promised.

“So who is it?” Her mom wasn’t letting this go.

She’d know soon enough. When Michael was back, they were going to discuss the best way to tell their parents.

“I’m not ready to talk about it yet,” Grace said firmly. “But I’ll tell you about him soon. When I’m ready.”

Her mom groaned, looking disappointed.

“Maybe she’s scared you’ll feed him to the pigs,” Scott said.

Her dad’s first meeting with her mom’s brothers was legendary in town. Grace’s mom was their only sister and completely protected by them. She’d hidden the fact that she’d fallen for her boss from them for a long time.

But eventually she’d caved and come clean to them. And Logan had responded by having his pigs chase Grace’s dad through a field.

“We don’t even own any pigs,” her dad protested.

“But we know somebody who does.” Scott lifted a brow at Grace. “Why won’t you tell us more? Is he married or something?”

“No!” Grace frowned. “Why would you think that?”

Scott shrugged. “Dunno. There has to be some reason you don’t want us to know.”

She gave him a pointed look. “I promise I’ll tell you soon, okay? There are just a few things I need to work through first.”

“So it’s serious then?” her dad asked. The corner of his lip pulled to the side, like he was trying not to look annoyed.

“Yes.” She nodded. “It’s getting there.”

“So why not tell us right now?”

“Daniel, relax. She’ll tell us in her own time,” her mom said. “I shouldn’t have said anything. Can we change the subject?”

“We already did,” Scott pointed out. “To this.”

Grace tried not to sigh.

“Please give me some time,” she said. “That’s all I ask.”

Her mom cleared her throat, saving Grace from her dad. “Has everybody finished?” her mom asked. Grace looked down at her own half-full plate.

“Yes.” She nodded, standing. “I’ll help you clean up.”
