She narrowed her eyes at him. He opened his mouth to tease her some more when the bang came again.

“You had to hear it this time.” She groaned, lifting her leg to roll off of him.

Michael lifted a brow. “I did. You expecting somebody?”

“I got a grocery delivery coming this evening. The guy’s probably early.” She walked over to her window, her bare skin glowing in the half light as she looked out. “I can’t see anybody.”

Michael rolled over to grab his pants, sliding them on as he rose from the bed. “I’ll get rid of them.”

“Oh no you won’t.” She shook her head. “Stay here.”

“Grace?” A loud voice made them both jump. A man. Inside the house.

Not just any man. Grace turned to Michael, her horrified eyes meeting his.

“Shit. That’s my dad.”

ChapterTwenty-Five

The momentshe heard his voice, everything froze. Everything except the fast pulse of her heart. What was her dad doing here? Why had he let himself in?

She felt sick. Like she was going to throw up at any minute.

“Oh God,” she said again.

Michael caught her eye. “It’s okay. We were going to tell him anyway, right?”

Yes, but not like this. What father would take finding his daughter in bed with her much older step cousin well?

She’d planned to ease him into it. Let him see them fully dressed first. Dear god, where were her clothes?

Over there. By the bed. She snatched her panties from the floor and tried to slide both feet into one hole before toppling over.

“You’re white as a sheet,” Michael whispered, helping her up. “Try not to panic.”

“Grace? Are you here? Mom told me you came home sick.” There was a thump of feet on the stairs.

She was deer-in-the-headlights panicked. “I’m okay,” she shouted. “Give me a minute.”

There was only drywall between her and complete devastation. It was like she was a child again, caught doing something wrong. She shot a fearful look at Michael. Why wasn’t he trying to climb out of the window?

He reached for her, taking her hand. “It’s okay,” he murmured softly.

But it wasn’t. This wasn’t supposed to happen. They had it all planned out.

“Mom asked me to drop your sweater off,” her dad shouted through the door. He sounded so close. “You left it at our house on Sunday. Mom forgot to give it to you at work since you went home.”

Why? Why would he do that? She didn’t need a damn sweater. She had an entire closet of them.

“You need to hide,” she grunted at Michael.

He looked around the room. “Where?”

She followed his gaze. Her room was tiny. Even her closet was too small for this six- foot-two giant.

Why did he have to be so big?

“Get on the other side of the bed.”
