And that would cause more problems. For Ethan’s sick dad. For Logan, too, because Ethan and his dad were the only vets in town. If they had to use a different company, that would mean a longer wait every time they called, and this farm was full of livestock.

She nodded, and he walked away then she turned back to Arcadia and looped her hands around his long neck. Arcadia let out a soft whinny, nuzzling into Grace.

What a mess this all was. And it wasn’t just Ethan’s doing, though what he’d done was bad enough.

It was her, too. She’d made assumptions. Thrown them into Michael’s face.

And all the while, he’d stood up for her. Stood up for her horse.

She owed him the biggest apology.

She just didn’t know if he’d accept it.

Michael was the only one in the house that afternoon. Cam had taken Mia out shopping, and Sabrina was at a friend’s house – having promised him that no alcohol would be involved. He had no idea where Mason was. When Michael had asked about Ethan’s nose earlier in the morning, Mason had rolled his eyes and shrugged.

Some things were probably best not talked about. Didn’t stop Michael feeling pissed though.

At Ethan. At Grace. Mostly at himself.

He’d actually asked Sabrina to call and make sure Grace had arrived home safely last night, because damn, she was behaving like an idiot. He’d only been able to sleep once his sister had let him know all was fine.

He pushed down his laptop screen and stood, walking to the kitchen to make himself a coffee.

He’d been home a matter of weeks and was already causing problems with his family. Mason was pissed with him, Sabrina wanted all the gossip, and Cam had warned him not to say a word to his mom.

Not that he would. She didn’t need this kind of hassle.

What was it he and Grace had talked about? How coming home to your family’s town made you regress to feeling like a kid again?

His phone lit up with Logan’s name on the screen, and Michael slid his finger to accept it, putting it on speaker.

“Hey. How’s the horse?” He assumed that was why Logan was calling.

“Just being finished being re-shoed. The farrier was here.”

Well, that was good at least. He’d done the right thing, even if Grace blamed him for it. “Did the cops come?”

“Grace doesn’t want to press charges.”

“Does she have a choice?” Michael asked, frowning. “It was your farm it happened on. Don’t you get to decide if you make a report?”

“Kind of,” Logan told him. “But Grace is upset, and I didn’t want to insist any more. Plus, I’ve had my own problems with the cops in the past.”

Michael could vaguely remember something about Logan’s wife being harassed by a police officer before she married Logan. A local cop, he thought. But it was before his time.

“So he’s just gonna get away with it?” He hated that thought.

“I didn’t say that. I’ve spoken to his father. And to my lawyer. Made it clear that if Ethan does anything like it again, he’ll be in legal trouble. The whole town will be watching him like a hawk.”

“He should face some kind of punishment.”

“I know. But his dad’s sick and Ethan’s a kid. We all made mistakes when we were younger. It’s how we grow from them that matters.”

“Easy to say when you’re not the one being accused of breaking his nose.”

Logan chuckled. “You did good. And we all know you’re not a violent man.”
