“Don’t call the cops. I’ll talk to him.” She walked toward Arcadia and stroked his velvety nose. “Hey, sweetie,” she murmured. “No ride for us today.” Dropping to her haunches, she looked at her horse’s shoe. Two nails were missing, and the others were loose, just like Logan had told her.

Michael hadn’t fought with Ethan about her at all. It was because he’d hurt her horse. She grimaced at the thought of the things she’d said to him last night.

“It’s not a little thing, Grace,” Logan said, running his hands through his hair. “Arcadia could have ended up injured. Hell, if you’d ridden him without checking, you could have ended up in an accident. He’s a vet. He’s supposed to take care of animals, not hurt them.”

She swallowed hard. The thought of Arcadia being hurt pained her much more than thinking about her own danger. “I always check him before I ride.”

“Ethan doesn’t know that.”

“I just don’t get why he’d do this,” she said. “Why would Ethan hurt my horse?”

“According to Michael, it was part of his plan to woo you. To come in and save the day, then ask you out.”

She swallowed. “He hurt Arcadia because he wants to date me?”

“Yeah, that’s seems about right.”

“And then Michael punched him,” she murmured.

Logan shook his head. “No. Ethan hurt himself.”

Grace blinked and looked up at her uncle. “What?”

“You’re talking about the broken nose, right?”

“Yeah.” She nodded. “Michael hit Ethan.” She still hated violence, but she could understand why it happened a little more now. Her stomach tightened. She was such an idiot.

“No. Ethan went to hit Michael, Michael moved out of the way and Ethan slammed into the wall and fell over. Landed awkwardly on the floor. His nose had an argument with some concrete.”

Her breath caught in her throat. “He fell over?”

Logan lifted a brow. “I wouldn’t have blamed Michael for hitting him, but yeah, from what I can tell, Michael didn’t touch the asshole.” He blinked. “Sorry for swearing.”

It was nothing compared to the words she wanted to utter. All she could think about was how Michael had looked as she drove away. And he’d still warned her to drive carefully.

Dear Lord, she was the asshole. The biggest one. “I didn’t know,” she whispered.

“It was all a bit of a mess. And we agreed we wouldn’t tell Mia, so we tried to keep things easy last night.”

“I’m glad you didn’t.” Her hand shook as she patted Arcadia again.

“You look tired,” Logan said softly. “Why don’t you go home? I can wait for the farrier to come.”

She shook her head. “I’ll wait.” She wanted to. She needed to make sure Arcadia was okay. “Thank you, though.”

He nodded. “You know where I am if you need me.”

“I do.” She gave him the faintest of smiles.

He pressed his lips together. “I’m sorry, Grace. I trusted him.”

It took her a moment to realize he was talking about Ethan. She was so fixated on Michael she had almost forgotten about him.

But not completely. The damn ass hurt her horse.

“It’s not your fault. I trusted him, too.” At least not to hurt Arcadia.

“We’ll be changing vets, of course.”
