He squeezed his eyes shut. “Thank God.”

“And I want you here. I want you to leave London, but only if that’s what you want. We can make it work long distance if we need to. Or I could move there.”

“No. It makes sense for me to do the move. I have contacts here. I can set up another business in the States.”

“And you’d do that for me?” she asked softly.

“I’d do that for me.” He stroked her hair. “Because I want this.”

So did she. So much. “Okay. So we do it. You go to London and settle everything, then when your mom’s ready, we tell everyone and let all hell break loose.”

He grinned. “You make it sound so romantic.”

She slid her fingers into his, squeezing them tight. “Come take a shower with me.” She needed to be close to him. Naked. To take away the barriers between them.

“You look like you’ve already showered,” he said, touching her wet hair.

“I have. But I want to wash you all over. Make you dirty, then make you clean.”

His eyes darkened. “Sounds like a good way to start the day.”

She pulled him into the bathroom, and they both undressed.

In a few hours she’d have to go home and leave him here. But now it felt like a different kind of parting.

A softer, gentler one that felt like a blanket wrapped around her body. They were going to work this out because he didn’t want to let her go.

Michael put her weekend bag into the trunk, then slammed it shut, walking around the car to where she was leaning against the driver’s door. “The bed’s going to feel way too big without you tonight.”

She wanted to stay. To drive straight to work tomorrow, having spent the night curled up around him, but they both knew that was pushing things too far. She’d already asked Ella to lie for her about the last two days. She couldn’t ask her to lie more.

And her brain – the only part of her that was thinking straight – knew it would look so much better if she arrived back today and Michael stayed in Charleston until tomorrow for the meetings he’d lied about.

“I’ll call you when I get back,” she said, smiling at him. They’d spent the day walking around Charleston hand in hand. She was getting used to it.

Getting used to being his.

She craved it, like she craved oxygen. He reached out to trace her lips with his finger, swallowing hard when she fluttered her tongue against the tip.

“We can do this for a few weeks more,” he said. “Until Mom’s feeling better.”

And then they’d come clean. They hadn’t talked specifics yet – she’d have to work out how to deal with her parents without them exploding – but it was worth it.

She needed to be with this man.

He cupped her cheek, his eyes warm. “I can’t wait until I can do this every day without worrying about who’s looking.” He pulled her close, stroking the hair from her face as he leaned down to kiss her. His mouth was soft, and she felt the pleasure of it all throughout her body.

He pulled away from her, but she wanted more.

“Let’s go back to bed,” she murmured.

He laughed. “I’d prefer that you got home before it gets dark.” Reaching behind her, he grabbed the door handle. “Now get out of here before I change my mind.”

“Is that an order?” She batted her eyelashes.

“Yep.”
