“Then yes, sir,” she whispered, kissing him softly. “Whatever you say.”

She stepped away, and he opened the door, holding it as she’d climbed into the driver’s seat. She put her purse on the passenger seat and grabbed her phone, connecting it to her stereo so she could play some music.

Michael leaned in the opened door. “Call me as soon as you get home.”

“Yes, Daddy.”

He rolled his eyes, and she blew a kiss at him. She still loved teasing him.

Loved everything about him.

“And drive safely.”

She grinned. “Are we going to do this every time I leave you?”

“Probably. I have a vested interest in making sure you get home safe.” He leaned in to kiss her again. She sighed against his lips. There would be more times like this in the future, she knew that. But it was hard hiding this. Knowing he was hers and not being able to touch him in public, or really acknowledge his existence.

She was so happy that the lying would be over soon.

“Close the door then,” she said. “Or I won’t be going anywhere.”

“Smartass.” He closed it and she turned on the ignition, winding down her window. Then she hit play on her phone, and strings started up, followed by Lana Del Ray’s voice asking if he’d be her baby tonight.

“What’s this song?” he asked, almost shouting to be heard over the music.

“Lana Del Ray.Lolita.” She laughed because she was no Lolita and he was no Humbert Humbert, but he still looked slightly annoyed.

“ByeDaddy.”

And now he looked even more annoyed. And she couldn’t help but laugh some more.

ChapterTwenty

“Hey sweetie, how was your weekend?”her mom asked, closing the office door behind her and perching on the corner of Grace’s desk.

“It was fun.” Grace nodded, keeping her eyes on her laptop.

“And Ella? Is she okay?”

“She’s fine. We drank too much on Saturday night, but all was good. Did a little exploring, a little karaoke.”

“You’ve always loved to sing,” her mom said, sounding wistful. “I remember watching you in the school choir.”

“Did you have a good weekend?” Grace asked her. She wasn’t in the mood for a trip down memory lane right now.

“It was fine. I went riding on Saturday and then had Mia and Cam over for lunch on Sunday. They were feeling a little lonely, I think. All their kids are away.”

“Where’s Sabrina at?”

“She was staying with a friend for the weekend. Josh is in Charleston, of course.”

Of course. Grace said nothing.

“And I’ve no idea where Mason went. I forgot to ask.” Her mom shrugged.

“And Michael,” Grace prompted. “He wasn’t there either?” She had no idea why she said that. Maybe because she hated him being left out.

Or because she needed to say his name to remind herself that he was real.
