“What’s sinful is the things you men say just to work me up,” I complain.

“What, you don’t enjoy it?” Zach gives me a knowing smirk as he crowds me, his scent invading my senses. “Working you up is the best part of my Friday. Watching the way your eyes go wide, your skin flushes red, and your lips fall open on a silent gasp,” Zach pulls my bottom lip from between my lips with his thumb. He watches the motion of his thumb caressing my swollen flesh, and I watch him.

“I like the way you look at me,” I admit as his hand drops. “And the way your words make me feel.” I bury my face in my hands, groaning. “I can’t believe I just said that!”

“Stop tormenting her,” a new voice says with a laugh, and I look up to find Isaiah crossing his arms over his chest as he stares at me.

“How much did you hear?” I yelp, and Isaiah smirks.

“Enough, baby, enough.” Crossing my arms over the tabletop, I drop my forehead and bang it against the table.

“I’d like to disappear now,” I grumble.

“Not a chance,” Zach says.

“Now come on, I have a date planned. We’ll be late,” Isaiah says, and Zach moves out of the way, so I can climb out, still blushing.

“We’ll finish this conversation later.” Zach’s dark promise makes me shiver. I meet his eyes, bite my lip, nod, and then scurry away, pulling my jacket back on.

“As much as I love the sight from back here, I’d really rather walk beside you.” Isaiah sounds amused, but I still slow to a more reasonable pace.

“If you had asked me on this date, I could have gotten ready,” I complain. “We never talked about dates…” I mumble.

“How can I woo you if I don’t take you on dates?”

“Why are you trying to woo me?” I snap and then flinch. “Sorry, I think I’m just hungry…” Right on cue, my stomach growls…loudly. “Well, that's embarrassing.”

“Our ride is just around the corner,” Isaiah reassures me. I’m busy keeping my hands warm, so I don’t notice exactly what our ride is until I hear it. A massive horse huffs, and my eyes go wide. The Clydesdale is decorated in beautiful red and green felt blankets, with a bow tied to its immaculate mane. The carriage it’s towing is made of a beautiful dark wood, and the velvet seats are a glittering white.

I’m struck by the beauty and at a loss for words.

“It’s only a few blocks to our destination.” Isaiah wraps a strong arm around my waist and tugs me toward the carriage.

“I don’t know what to say.” No one’s ever done anything like this for me…

He helps me up before climbing in beside me and tucking me against his side. The cold doesn’t feel so bad like this…

“You look stunning tonight. I promise to give you a warning next time, but this was spur of the moment. Stan wasn’t supposed to bring the carriage out until next week. I wanted you to be the first ride of the season.” I lift a brow, making him snort. “Not what I meant.”

“Well, thank you. This is the best surprise I’ve ever gotten.” I lean into him, resting my head against his shoulder. I want to kiss him, but I remember his promise.

“My pleasure,” he whispers.

The rest of the ride is quiet as we pass trees decorated for the holiday.

When the carriage comes to a stop, I’m reluctant to get out.

“Come on, baby. You’ll like this surprise even better.” He winks. When Isaiah helps me out of the carriage, the man that had been directing the horse steps around the front, holding out a carrot.

“Hold your palm flat like this.” He holds his hand out with the carrot resting in his palm. When he hands me the carrot, I mimic him and then offer it to the beautiful brown horse. She immediately scarfs it up, her big lips tickling my palm, and I step backward into Isaiah.

He catches me with his hands on my waist. “Come on, there's more.”

I nod, allowing him to lead me toward the small park we stopped beside.

“Eyes closed,” he instructs, and I hesitate but eventually agree. I let him lead me for a few minutes before complaining.

“Can I look yet?”
