Page 31 of Love is Cupid

“True was… I don’t even fucking know. If I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes… I thought I was losing my mind, but–” He shakes his head, taking a sip from a glass I hadn’t noticed him holding before. “She’s some kind of fucking Cupid? She has magic and was talking to someone about the three of us. About using magic on us to make us fall in love…” He shakes his head, running a hand through his disheveled hair, and laughs.

“True is a fairy! I told you!” Cooper shouts behind Bell, and I, and we all spin to face the boy. I freeze, not knowing what the hell either of them is talking about. Milo scoffs.

“I saw her fucking wings. Like the ones you painted,” he says, and my eyes go wide. I’d had a dream of True walking through a meadow, beautiful wings stretched wide. I had thought it was just my imagination. Just my thoughts of her being an angel manifesting in my dreams, but…

“Wings?” I ask, and Milo nods. He walks over to Coop’s room, but the kid slams the door in his father’s face.

“Yeah, pink fucking wings.” Bell and I follow him, as he heads into the room that True was staying in. Bell shuts the door behind him when we’re all inside. Probably for the best. Cooper doesn’t need to hear any of this.

“I thought… I thought maybe she wanted more from me,” Milo whispers. “That maybe she could be a part of our lives more permanently. She was so good with Cooper… I’m a fucking idiot.”

“You liked her?” Bellamy asks, speaking for the first time since Milo attempted to explain why True is gone.

“Yeah.” Milo nods, shaking his head, and letting out a humorless laugh. “I was a fucking idiot.”

“I– We… She and I…” Bellamy mumbles, looking lost. My eyebrows shoot up, and I look between my brother and our best friend.

“We were all falling for her.” I realize, and the other two just stare blankly at each other.

“We’re fucking idiots,” Bellamy growls, but my heart doesn’t agree. True cared for us. I felt it.

No one’s perfect. I need to see her. I want to give her the chance to explain. I need to hear her side.

Milo shakes his head, leaving the room, before making his way to Cooper’s door and knocking. Bell and I stand here, just staring at the empty room.

“Come on, kid, let's talk.” But Cooper ignores him. I pull my phone out. I need to see True. I need to find out where she is. I’m about to call her when Milo starts shouting.

“Cooper!” He opened the kid's door when he didn’t answer, and my guess is, he’s hiding in the closet. That's where I always used to hide too. When my parents would fight like rabid dogs… Where we’d hide. “COOPER!” His shouts are growing more panicked, so I head over, so I can help him search the room. Cooper’s in there somewhere.

Except he’s not.

Milo sprints to the front door, and Bell and I follow. The door is wide open, and Cooper is gone. Fuck.

True

I’m sobbing on Mason’s couch, even as he grumbles at me about pulling myself together.

“It’s only been three hours, Maisley,” I snap, and he glares.

“Really? Like Paisley? Is that the best you got?” he smirks, and when I pick a candle up off his coffee table and throw it at him, he yelps. “Oh, very mature…”

“Fuck off, Mailroom.” I flip him the bird and then bury my face in his cushions once again.

I pull my phone out of my pocket, and swipe it open, staring at Milo’s contact. My thumb hovers over the green call button, but I hesitate.

“Give me that.” The Dark Cupid snatches my phone out of my hand and tucks it into his pocket. “You can have this back tomorrow. Maybe the day after.” He shakes his head, placing a cup of tea down on the table in front of me. “Sip it.” He nods, and I sniffle, sitting up. The brat walks over to the kitchen, and I hear him say something, but not to me.

“What?” I ask, leaning forward to try and catch a glimpse of him.

“This is Mason, someone who actually cares about True, who the fuck are you?” he growls into the phone, and I jump to my feet, rushing to him.

“Give me my phone, Mason,” I demand, and he holds a finger up in my face.

“No, you sick fuck, True is my family. Of course, I’m not fucking her. Do you fuck your siblings?” He hisses, and my eyes bug out of my skull.

“How are we family? We don’t even like each other!” I throw my hands up, and Mason covers the lower half of the phone with his free hand.
