“You’re punishing the wrong person. If you need someone to be mad at, be mad at me. I can take it.” As soon as he says it, he dashes out the door. He hates confrontation. He hates facing the past, and he really hates emotional conversations.

As my brother, my twin, leaves me sitting here, I’m left alone with my thoughts once more. I feel something snap.

My heart, maybe. Nix doesn’t blame me? I thought he hated me. He can hardly look me in the eyes. Hell, he couldn’t even look at me while he said all that. Standing, I walk over to the floor-length mirror on my wall, take one look at myself, and cringe.

“Yikes…” I whisper. No wonder Holden called Nix. But what did he say to get Nix here?

Nix is right. I need to get my shit together. Guess I’ll start with a shower.

CHAPTER TWENTY FIVE

“Waves” by Dean Lewis

NASH

I watch Nix storm up the stairs…it takes my brain longer than it should to process what I just saw.

Holden reacts faster, though. He jumps up and follows Nix. I hear voices, but I can’t tell what they’re saying.

“That was Nix, right?” Ren asks, and I chuckle.

“Pretty sure, yeah.” It was just Holden, Ren, and me in the living room, so a person dashing by looking like our best friend couldn’t be missed.

“Did Holden call him?” Ren asks, and I shrug.

“I think so? I didn’t. And it’s not like him to just show up.” I sigh. I hear a door shut, cursing, and then another door shutting.

Not even five minutes later, Nix comes prancing back downstairs. He flops down between Ren and me and grins.

“Sup.” He nods.

“The fuck?” I ask, and Nix snorts.

“You didn’t think I’d miss your first game of the season, did you?” Nix asks, looking between us, and I lift a brow.

“You mean like you missed the first game of every season for the last three years?” I point out, making Nix chuckle.

“Holden said Rose is acting a little too much like her twin brother. Thought I’d swoop in and save the day.” Nix winks, and I snort again. Yeah, that sounds like Nix.

“So fuck us, I guess?” Ren asks, and Nix shakes his head.

“No, I’m good, man. I like pussy.”

“Nix.” Ren glares, making our best friend laugh.

“What?” Nix throws his hands up. When neither of us responds, he drops his hands. “Fine. Look, I know I’m a shitty friend.”

“Little bit.” I agree, and Nix rolls his eyes, going on like I didn’t even speak.

“But I never meant to be such a shitty brother, okay? I didn’t know she was…struggling.” Nix admits, looking guilty for the first time…probably ever. “I didn’t realize… I mean, I should have. She was hurt too. I was just so caught up in my own shit.”

“Have you been body snatched?” I ask, frowning at the self-aware ass next to me.

“Government spy?” Ren offers, and Nix punches his arm.

“Why the fuck would the government give a shit about you losers? Fuck off.” Nix laughs, but it doesn’t last. “Milly…” Nix lifts a shoulder before a dopey ass grin spreads across his face. “She’s really smart.”

“Holy shit. You’re in love with the girl you stole from Holden,” I chuckle, and Nix bites his lip.
