Her wide eyes come to mine, and she lets out a scream before flopping backward in my arms and wailing.

“Whoa, what’s all that about? Don’t worry. Your momma is coming back. I promise.”

She continues pitching her little fit while I lock up. Once I get her in the truck and we are rolling down the road, she finally runs out of gas and falls fast asleep.

Thank goodness. Her sobs were breaking my heart.

I decide to skip stopping by my house and head straight to Graham’s for backup so I can shower.

Gathering all her things and extracting Kaela from the truck without waking her is a feat.

How does Anna do this by herself?

Graham greets us at the door and takes the diaper bag from me. I walk Kaela to the love seat and lay her down, covering her with her blanket and tucking her elephant beside her.

Graham sets the diaper bag down, and the two of us stand there, watching her.

“Can you keep an eye on her while I hose off?” I ask.

“Yeah, there are clean towels in my and Taeli’s bathroom,” he says.

I shower and dress quickly, and when I make it back to the living room, Langford has arrived with Tucker and Caleb. He’s lying back in one of the recliners with Kaela in his lap and the remote in his hand.

I take a seat on the couch.

“Want me to take her?” I ask.

He looks down at Kaela as she grabs at the remote.

He chuckles. “It’s been a long time since I’ve had one that little.”

“She’s a handful,” I say.

“As she should be,” he says to her.

I take one of the bottles from her bag, and Graham warms it in a pot of water while I change her diaper on the floor.

“Ooh-wee. How did something so beautiful make something so stinky?” I ask as she kicks her legs and blows spit bubbles.

I get her cleaned up, and then we settle in front of the television with the others. I feed her the bottle as the game starts.

“I’m impressed. You look like a pro with a baby,” Langford muses.

“I’ve been paying attention,” I quip.

“Good. That’ll come in handy soon, Uncle Weston.”

I smile. Then, my head snaps up.

“Who’s expecting? Ansley? Taeli?” I ask.

He grins.

“No way. Isley? Already? You work fast, brother. Here I thought, your swimmers were fossils.”

“Whatever, fucker,” he growls.

I put my hand over Kaela’s ear.
