Pulling my truck to the curb, I took in the scene. Three fire trucks, one EMS, two police cars, and a crowd gathered around to gawk at whatever was happening. I spotted Sadie standing beside KJ, speaking to an officer at the rear of one of the fire trucks.

"What the fuck happened?" I growled, stepping in front of Sadie as my gaze scanned her over, checking to make sure she was okay.

"There was a fire," KJ said, his gaze locking on mine.

Fuck...

"When can I get back inside?" Sadie asked the police officer.

"I'm sorry, ma'am," he offered an apologetic smile. "But the house isn't safe. It will need significant work before it is livable again."

"Where was the fire?" I asked.

"We managed to contain it to the kitchen and dining room area," he said. "But as I said, it's not livable."

"Can we get some of her things?" I asked.

"I'll check with the fire department to see if she can enter the residence to collect some things." He forced a smile. "But you should know that most things will need to be replaced even if they weren't directly affected by the fire. The smoke clings to things."

I nodded, and he strolled off to speak with the fire department.

"What the fuck am I going to do?" Sadie said, her voice trembling.

"You'll stay with me," I said.

"What?" She scowled. "No."

"You don't really have a whole lot of options, Sadie," I reminded her.

"I can't live in the team party house with you," she said.

"No, you can't," I agreed. "I have a room there, but that's not where I actually live." Even though I spent about ninety percent of my time at the team house, I had a home that I purchased when I first moved to this town before the team house even existed. It was the house I had just moved my sister into.

This should be interesting...

"Ms. Prescott," the officer called out. Our gaze shifted up to the officer as he approached us. "Fire Chief Branson will escort you in the house, but you'll only have a couple minutes to collect a few things."

"Thank you." Sadie sighed.

"We'll wait here for you," I said. She nodded, and the officer escorted her to the house where the fire chief awaited her.

"Please tell me you had nothing to do with this," KJ muttered, his gaze following Sadie as she entered the house, but he didn't wait for my response. "We were in the fucking house, man." My gaze flicked around the crowd spotting Taylor and Caleb mixed in the people, and when my gaze locked with Taylor's dark eyes, I knew I was responsible for this.

And that's what happens when you don't handle things yourself.

"When Sadie's done," I said. "Take her to my house on Washington Street and stay with her until I get there."

Blowing out a heavy sigh, he nodded. "Where are you going?"

"I have something I need to deal with," I muttered. "Oh, and Bri is there."

His gaze snapped up, meeting mine. "What the fuck, man?" He groaned. Bri had it bad for KJ, and she didn't exactly take no for an answer, but KJ would never cross that line because she was my sister, and he was my best friend. "Good luck." I strolled off.

"You better hurry the fuck up," he hissed to my back, and I threw a thumbs up over my shoulder.

I jerked my head, passing Taylor and Caleb, indicating they needed to follow me as I strolled past the crowd and into the darkness.

"We didn't know she was home," Taylor said before I could ask what the fuck happened. "We thought she was with you."
