"You could have killed her," I growled.

"We did what you told us."

"I said to make her home unlivable," I growled, stepping into him. "Not set her house on fire with her in it." I needed her place to be temporarily unavailable so that she would be forced to live with me so I could ensure her safety for the next few months.

"I know, man," Taylor said, holding his hands out to hold me back. "Thinking back now, we should have flooded the place, but fire was what came to mind."

"You're both morons," I growled. Twisting around, my gaze landed on Sadie loading into KJ's blue Toyota Tacoma and KJ tossing her things into the back." Go back to the team house and tell no one about this."

SADIE

"I don't understandwhat was so important." I groaned, watching KJ pull my bags out of the back of his truck.

"He didn't tell me," KJ said dryly, flinging my bag over his shoulder. I shouldn't be surprised. Jayden was always so secretive, apparently to everyone.

I reached out for my other bag. "Girl," he snarled, snatching the bag away like I'd insulted him. "Go." He jerked his head towards the front of the large single-story house.

The front door flew open, and a short, pretty, dark-haired girl with eyes the same shade of blue as Jayden's appeared in the doorway. It was the same girl from Jayden's room. She was petite compared to her brother, with long dark hair pulled back into a loose ponytail. She was wearing a thin tight tank top and a pair of black elastic gym shorts.

"KJ" The girl smiled. Her face lit up at the sight of him. Of course, she didn't notice me, and I couldn't blame her. KJ was hot.

"Bri," KJ groaned like he wasn't as happy to see her as she was him, and I couldn't help but wonder what their story was. "Bri, this is Sadie. Sadie, this is Bri, Jayden's younger sister." Her cold gaze flashed to me, and I forced a smile. Pursing her full lips, her eyes scanned over me like she was sizing me up.

"So you're the ‘not my girlfriend,'” she finally said, her gaze meeting mine, and I couldn't help but smile. Jayden had told her about me.

"So you're the drugged-out sister," I retorted. KJ's eyes went wide as his gaze flicked between the two of us, entranced in a stare-down, but when her lips twitched with amusement, we both knew this wasn't going to be a fight.

"I think I might like you." She smiled, stepping back so we could walk through the doorway. "Where's Jayden?"

"That's a great question," I muttered, stepping through the door into the living room.

"He had something he needed to take care of," KJ said, looking for a place to drop my things.

"What the fuck happened?" Bri turned up her nose as the smell of burnt tires hit all of us in the enclosed space.

"Sadie's house caught fire tonight," KJ said, searching the room for a place to put the bags.

"Oh shit," Bri muttered, her eyes flashing to mine.

"I'll put these outside," KJ said, sliding the back sliding glass door open and dropping the bag outside. "Everything needs to be washed."

"Why don't you go get a shower?" Bri suggested, and I realized that I also smelled like burnt popcorn. "You can borrow some of my clothes until we can get the smell out of yours."

Bri collected a few things for me, and I couldn't help but think she was being so nice because she wanted to get rid of me to be alone with KJ. Not that I could blame her.

Rounding the corner, using my towel to dry my still-dampened hair, I froze.

Fuck... I knew it...

I knew there was a story between the two of them, and apparently a hot one.

Bri's tiny body was pressed tightly against KJ, pinning him against the wall as he inhaled her face. I knew I should walk away, but I couldn't. I was frozen in place. The two were so into each other that they didn't hear or see me standing twenty feet away watching them. I knew what that felt like.

Jayden made me feel like that—like when I was with him, nothing else mattered.
