SADIE

Pushing through the front door,I dropped my bag on the floor.

"Bri," I called out, throwing the door shut.

Nothing.

It was three o'clock in the afternoon, but she could be sleeping. I checked my watch. I still had a while before Jayden returned from his away game.

I grabbed something to eat, showered, and then settled into the couch to wait for him when my phone rang.

It was Bri.

"Hey." I scowled. Why would she call me from her bedroom? "Everything ok?"

"Not exactly," she said. "I need your help."

"Where are you?"

"Please don't tell Jayden," she said. "But I'm at Dougie's." I didn't know much about Bri's past, but I'd heard Dougie's place or house referred to several times as a place where Bri had to be dragged out of high several times.

"Bri, what the fuck?"

"It's not what you think, Sadie," she said. "My friend was here, and I've been trying to help her, but she's in bad shape, and I need help getting her out of here."

"Call 9-1-1, Bri," I hissed.

"I can't do that," Bri said. "She'll be arrested, and we'll both be dead because we brought the cops here."

"What am I supposed to do?"

"Just drive Jayden's truck here and help me get her out of here," Bri said, and I could hear the desperation laced in her words. "We'll be in and out." I knew this was a bad idea, but I couldn't leave Bri stranded.

"How did you get there?"

"It's a long story," she said.

"Bri," I asked. "Are you on drugs?"

"No," she said. "I wanted to, but I didn't. I swear."

"Send me the address." I sighed. "I'm leaving now."

I didn't bother getting dressed; I grabbed Jayden's keys off the counter and bolted to the door, loading into his truck and entering the address Bri sent me into the GPS.

Twenty minutes away.

We would definitely need to be in and out if we were going to get back before Jayden did. I wasn't sure how mad he would be at this.

Swerving into the driveway of the old worn wood-framed house, I immediately recognized it as the house we'd picked Bri up from the night Jayden forced me to come with him. I put the truck in park and sent Bri and message that I was there.

No reply...

"Shit," I muttered after several long minutes as I pushed the truck door open, slid out, and headed for the front door. I raised my hand to knock, but before I could, her screams echoed through the house's walls.
