I shoved the door open. My gaze flicked around the disgusting house. This was a drug house. It smelled like stale weed and vomit.

"Bri," I yelled, stepping over the garbage-littered floor. "Bri." Another scream. It wasn't Bri.

"Shut up, bitch," a deep male voice growled, and I followed the sound toward the back of the house.

"Stop it, Les," Bri yelled. "Just leave."

The voices were coming out of a back bedroom. I had no idea what I was about to walk into, and I didn't know if weapons were involved. I carefully peeked around the corner to assess the situation.

Bri and her drugged-out blonde friend were pinned in the corner of the room, and the tall, thin, but muscular man stood raging in front of them with his back to me. I couldn't tell what he looked like because he had a black hoodie pulled over his head.

"Get up, Bri," the man hissed. "You're coming with me. Don't make this harder than it has to be."

Fuck, I needed to find something big to take this guy out.

Luckily it was a drug house, and they had lots of options. I grabbed an old wooden bat sitting in the corner and carefully stepped through the trash, making sure not to make a sound.

There were three of us and one of him, so hopefully, if the bat didn't knock him out, it would hurt him enough we'd be able to take him.

Stepping through the door, I raised the bat above my head at the same time Bri noticed me, and the man lunged for Bri. She screamed, and I slammed the bat into the man's back. I was aiming for his head.

He winced with a grunt, but it didn't faze him as he twisted to see me. His dark eyes locked on mine. Shit.

"What the fuck?" he muttered. Rearing back his arm, he cracked the back of his hand across my face so hard I saw stars as I stumbled backward, fighting to stay on my feet. I didn't stand a chance if I was on the ground.

Bri blew out a growl as she charged forward, jumping on his back, and the blonde jumped in, too, and when he tossed them off, I was ready and slammed the bat into his face with every bit of force I could muster. Before he even knew what hit him, he was collapsing to the floor.

"Fuck yeah," Bri shouted, pumping her fist in the air. "I didn't know you had it in you." I didn't, either.

"We need to go," I said, dropping the bat. We needed to get home before Jayden and be gone before this big man woke up and wanted to kill me. I didn't know who this guy was and didn't want to stay and find out, either.

We all ran to the truck, loaded up, and took off.

"Who was that guy?" I swerved the truck into traffic.

"My ex," Bri muttered, glancing over her shoulder, ensuring we weren't being followed. "I broke up with him when I got clean. He didn't take it well."

"Where are we taking her?" I glanced at the passed-out high blonde in the back seat through the rearview mirror. Thankfully, she waited until she got in the car to do that. "We can't take her back to Jayden's. He's going to be pissed if he finds out about this."

My gaze flicked over to Bri. The redness that had been covering her face was now starting to turn into deep purple bruises. A small cut on her bottom lip stopped bleeding, but it was red and angry. My gaze flicked to the rearview mirror, and my own shiner emerged from underneath the redness.

Oh, we are so fucked.

JAYDEN

My phone vibratedin my hand as I pushed through the front door. I dropped my suitcase in the doorway and pulled my phone out.

It was Sadie's dad's attorney. I clicked the phone black and shoved it back into my pocket. I didn't have the energy to deal with him at that moment. I would call him back later.

It wasn't like I didn't know what he wanted. I did. He wanted a meeting with Sadie as soon as possible. She was the key witness.

"Sadie," I called through the silent house.

Nothing...

"Bri?"
