“What the fuck?” he splutters, pissing me off more as Graham slowly rises to his feet at my right.

“This is your final chance, Declan,” Shift warns, knocking the safety off his gun and aiming it in the asshole's direction. “Tell us where Emily is or I will put a bullet between your eyes. I really don’t give a shit.”

“You can’t touch me.” He sneers, spitting blood onto my cut. I lift my hand back once more, but this time, a hand closes around mine. Turning my head to stare Graham down, I’m ready to give him a fucking warning by association, but he stops me with a shake of his head.

Resignation drops his features, disappointment carving frown lines into his forehead as he turns to look at his son.

“Tell them, son, or I’ll watch it happen.”

“You aren’t listening to me… none of you can touch me,” he repeats, swiping the back of his hand across his face.

“That’s exactly what Molly said before we killed her. See where I’m going with this,” I grind out, really hating that it’s taking this long to get answers.

He shakes his head. “I’m under the protection of local law enforcement.”

“That means absolutely nothing to—”

My cell phone rings in my pocket, cutting me off. I can’t leave it in case it’s something to do with Scarlett, so I toss Declan toward Shift as I reach into my pocket for it. My eyebrows knit in confusion as the incoming call flashes with an unknown number.

Nothing good ever comes from an unknown number.

Steeling my spine, I press the green button and lift the device to my ear “Hello?”

“Emmett, it’s been a while… again.” Ice slices through my veins at Hartman’s voice in my ear and my gaze narrows on the traitor now in Shift’s grasp. “I have your sister here. Unfortunately, I’ve had to arrest her for intentionally inflicting physical harm to me, knowingly placing me in imminent danger, and deliberately laying hands on me to provoke me.”

“Bullshit,” I bite, a film of red coating my vision.

“It’s true. I have witnesses of her hitting me with intent to cause harm.”

“Intention to fucking escape you, there's a difference.”

“Hmm, that’s to be seen really, but for now, she’ll do well in my custody. It may tame her a little.” He’s practically singing, the smug tone to his voice is infuriating.

Shift nudges my shoulder while still restraining Declan, and when he nods at the cell, I know he wants to know what’s going on. Putting the cell on speakerphone, I lift it higher in the air. “When I get down to the station, I’m going to murder you.”

“Are you threatening an officer?” This cunt really knows how to get under my skin.

“It’s not a threat, it’s a promise of vengeance.”

He chuckles, excited with the uproar he’s causing. “Good luck with that… I’m not even at the fucking station.”

The muscles in my neck bunch, my anger reflecting back at me in Shift’s eyes.

“Then you haven’t actually booked her? You’re just detaining her because you know this is a bunch of bullshit.” Silence extends between us, pain ricocheting through me before he clears his throat.

“Semantics. Payback's a bitch.”

The call ends, driving me insane as I turn my focus to Declan.

“Where is he?”

He chuckles, head lulling back as he hums. “Don’t know. Don’t care.”

“Shame,” Shift bites, lifting his gun to Declan’s temple and pulling the trigger without missing a beat. His body slumps to the floor as Shift swipes at an invisible piece of lint on his jacket.

Every inch of my body tingles with the eyes watching us, but the most important ones are Graham's, who stands with his palms pressed against the table before him, looking down at his dead son with a solemn look on his face.

“I will not retaliate for this, but my men are no longer at your disposal,” he says, and I shrug.
