“Then get your shit packed and get the fuck out of here. I have bigger issues to deal with than wondering where you are.” He nods once, staring down at Declan as he draws the sign of the cross at his chest, before turning to leave.

“How the fuck do we figure out where he is?” Shift asks, jaw set tight with frustration as my nostrils flare with anger.

“Check the security cameras,” I grunt, recalling Axel taking Scarlett with him to set them up at the deputy’s home. Shift is already moving, not bothering to respond to me as he goes in search of the only lead we have.

THIRTY-TWO

Scarlett

It feelslike I’m floating in water, drifting out to sea without any support or any worries to go with it. It’s a thought that confuses me, because I’ve never actually been to the ocean. Not open water like that, the closest I’ve been is to the waterfall… I think?

“Come on, Scarlett. You have to wake up.” The voice sounds familiar, but it’s like they’re miles away, like whispers on the wind. A hand strokes down my face, and I try my best to lean into the touch.

My fingers trail from someone’s eyebrow, down to their chin which is covered in a beard. It takes me a moment, but I manage to blink my eyes open to see one of the hottest guys I’ve ever laid eyes on.

His face softens as he looks deep into my eyes, and I get the sense that he’s familiar. I feel comfortable in his presence, which is reassuring, but the brain fog is taking its toll on me. Frowning, I clutch his t-shirt with one hand and cup his cheek with the other. “Am I dead? Is this heaven?”

I breathe, and a chuckle echoes in my ears like the sweetest music.

“You wish, Reaper.”

My eyes slam shut, the word Reaper on his tongue jolting me from my bleariness. “Axel?”

“You got it. Can you remember your name?”

I peer up at him, eyebrows furrowed. “Scarlett. Why are you asking me that?”

“Do you know where you are?” I slowly lift my head to glance around the room, not entirely sure where I am until I lay eyes on the dead body beside me.

Kincaid.

“We’re at the Devil’s Brutes’ compound,” I mumble, my memory coming back to me in small pieces.

“And who is your favorite Ruthless Brother?” he asks, and I turn to glare at him.

“Don’t be an asshole, Axel,” I grumble, and a chuckle sounds from behind me.

“Yeah, Axel, don’t be an asshole,” Ryker mocks, brushing his hair back off his face as he smiles at me.

“So, I’m not dead or in heaven then?”

“You think that’s where you're heading?” Axel asks, cocking a brow at me, and I pout, stroking my hand obsessively down his face while my hand at his t-shirt yanks him closer.

“Obviously not, but where else would I have the luxury of being able to touch you?” I sound delirious, feel it too, when I pause, slowly ticking over what it is I’m actually doing. I pull my hand away from him like he’s on fire. “Oh my God, I’m so fucking sorry,” I rush, my chest constricting with panic.

“Shut up, you idiot. I’m just glad you’re okay. Like I almost lost you for a second time, your touch lets me know you’re real. That being said, I’d rather we didn’t go for a third, okay?”

“Uh-huh,” I mumble in agreement as he grabs my hand from my chest and puts it back on his face. “Did the bullet hit me?”

“Please, does it feel like the bullet hit you? I’m a good fucking shot, Scar,” he retorts, and Ryker scoffs.

Tilting my head to the side, my grin spreads. “You are?”

His eyes narrow, but he presses a kiss to the center of my palm before releasing my hand and rising to his feet. He offers to help me stand and I take it. The room tilts and sways as I try to get my balance and the back of my head hurts like a bitch.

“What happened if it wasn’t the bullet?” I ask, glancing around the room, but my gaze quickly locks on Kincaid, and I can’t tear it away.

“You didn’t have your balance when he released his hold on you and you smacked your head on the table,” Ryker explains, coming to stand in front of me with a soft smile on his face. “I’m sorry I couldn’t make the shot, Rebel. With you between us, I was too scared.”
