How was any of this possible?

I confirmed the date and time we were meant to meet, and then I ended the call.

“What was that?” Cassie asked.

“I… think I have a house.”

“What?”

I explained to her what Samuel Howell had just said, including the weird parts.

“What does that even mean? Enchanted? And what’s the Board of Equality?”

“I don’t know,” I said.

She stared at me with wide eyes. “It sounds fishy to me.”

My gut twisted at the words. I didn’t want it to be fishy. It sounded too good to be true, but I needed it to be true.

“It doesn’t sound like a scam,” I argued.

“Did he want something from you?”

“Just a time to meet.”

“Maybe he’s a serial killer.”

I scrunched my nose and rubbed the back of my neck. “I don’t think so. He asked to meet at the attorney’s offices: Hines, McPherson, and Howell.”

“That sounds legit,” Cassie said and pulled out her phone. She typed the name into a search bar. “Yeah, it says here they specialize in divorce law, property tax, and deceased estates. The guy’s name was Simon?”

“Yeah,” I said.

Cassie raised her eyebrows. “His name and contact details are all listed here. It looks real.” Her fingers flew over the screen again. “Nothing about any Board of Equality, though, which is weird.”

“Oh, my God,” I breathed.

Was this really happening?

Cassie stood and came to me, pulling me into a hug.

“You’re going to be okay.”

“The house is in Portland.”

Cassie stilled before she pulled away from me. “So, you’re leaving?”

“I don’t know,” I said. “I feel like I don’t know anything anymore. This whole thing… it’s not real. I mean, it can’t be, can it? What if it’s fake?”

“Go and find out,” Cassie suggested.

“And if it’s real?”

“Then you go! Or you sell the place and pocket the cash.”

I rested my chin on my hand. “I could stay here, if I wanted to. If the place sells.” Except, there was nothing here for me. I could just as well leave, and maybe in Portland, things would be different. Maybe I could find a job, start a new life, pretend like my life here in Vegas hadn’t meant anything. At this point, I was starting to believe it had all been for nothing now that I’d lost it all.

“You’re going to be fine,” Cassie said more firmly. “Whatever it takes, you’ll figure it out. I told you, you’re a survivor.”
