It didn’t make sense.

“Bring them here,” I said. “I’ll put them in the hotel for the night. I want to talk to them myself.”

“We figured,” Rune said.

“Tell Zen to keep his hands off them,” I added. “I want them unharmed. He shouldn’t even talk to them more than is necessary. God knows what they’ve been through tonight, and he’s a handful on a good night.”

Rune chuckled. “Hear that?” he asked.

“Yeah, yeah,” Zen grumbled from what I assumed was behind the wheel next to Rune.

“I’ll see you later,” I said and ended the call.

I poured another shot of vodka before I walked to the windows, where I could look out over my city. I saw the neon lights, the parties below, the limos, and the people, dressed up and enjoying their time in Vegas, but I didn’t take any of it in. My mind drifted, running over all the questions I didn’t have answers to.

Another question had been added to the list: Why humans?

It took a couple of hours for the guys to get here. I waited in a conference room that was available to rent out to whoever needed it. Sometimes, people hosted weddings here, or expositions, or whatever else made the steep price of my venue worth their while.

I leaned against the wall, arms folded over my chest, waiting.

Zen pushed open the door, walking in first.

Rune followed, looking grim.

Behind them, the two girls came in, followed by Cullen, who brought up the rear. He was the only wolf shifter among dragons, and usually, he didn’t look like it bugged him, but tonight, his air was submissive. It pissed me off.

My eyes fell on the girls.

Except they weren’t girls. They were a woman and a child.

I blinked at the woman. I’d know those piercing green eyes and brunette hair anywhere. My heart constricted, and I had to pinch myself.

“Danna?”

She stared at me. I’d thought of her so many times over the years, dreamed of her, that having her in front of me, so close I could reach out and touch her, was surreal.

“Wesley,” she breathed.

The little girl tucked tightly to her side was a spitting image of her mother, with a pixie-like face. Her striking blue eyes were all mine, though. There was no doubt that this girl was mine.

My mind spun. We’d used a condom—I always did. Had it torn? Maybe… I couldn’t remember. It had been almost seven years ago, and I’d been so caught up in Danna.

No way she wasn’t mine, though. My dragon, my magic, would never react this way if she’d been fathered by someone else.

My heart leaped, and I took a step toward her before I could catch myself. I was drawn to her, a pull that could only be explained as the pull of a bloodline, of a magical connection.

That girl was mine.

Anger boiled under my skin. Someone had tried to hurt her, and they would fucking die for it!

I tried to reel it in, squashed the thoughts that clouded my mind, of violence and horror, of blood spilled for the crimes of someone who dared so much aslookat the daughter of the alpha.

I forced myself to focus on the now, to take in what I could see and shut down what I felt.

They both wore pajamas—the little girl wore a pink matching set with little sheep on it, and Danna wore a tank top and yoga pants.

She was as hot as she’d been seven years ago.
