“And you are?” I asked, kneeling so that I looked the girl in the eye. Of course, I knew who she was, but I needed a name. Something to hold on to.

“This is Emmie,” Danna said softly.

“Emmie,” I said, rolling the name around in my mouth.Emmie. “It’s going to be okay. I won’t let anyone hurt you, okay?”

Emmie’s blue eyes pierced me. “Are you like me?”

“I am,” I said.

I was being nice to her. I shouldn’t have been nice to her, I should have pushed her away, but I couldn’t help myself. Emmie was my daughter, the magical pull confirmed it, and the way she looked at me, lookingintome as if she understood me, made me want to get closer.

“You know this woman?” Rune asked, his voice somewhere far away.

I nodded slowly.

“Yeah. We need to talk.” The latter had been aimed at Danna.

I glanced up at her before I straightened until I towered over her petite form.

“We can’t stay here,” she said, looking around with wide eyes. “It’s not safe.”

“You’ll stay with me,” I said firmly.

My hands balled into fists. I wouldn’t let anything happen to them.

Mine, my beast growled. My daughter, my mate.

What the fuck is wrong with me?

Danna looked unsure.

“Take her to the penthouse,” I said over my shoulder.

“What?” Zen asked, looking confused. “You want her in your apartment?”

“You heard me,” I barked.

I kept my eyes on Danna, our gazes glued together. The whole world fell away, and I was lost in those evergreen eyes. Something tugged at my insides, and it was just as it had been all those years ago when I’d seen her the first time.

“Come on,” Rune said. If his voice was threatening in any way, I would have punched him in the face, but he was gentle. “Follow me. You’re safe with us. The a—Wesleywill make sure of it.” His tone was kind, but Danna still looked suspicious.

She hesitated, clearly warring with herself. I watched until her logic won out—where else was she going to go?

She followed Rune out of the door, the little girl holding onto her hand like it was a lifeline. Before she walked through the door, she glanced back at me, and my heart leaped in my chest.

I had to fight with everything inside me not to follow them, to take them to the penthouse myself, to make sure they were safe.

I stopped myself, fighting against the part of me that wanted to be stuck to their sides. I had to pull myself together.

I wasn’t good for them. I had to remember that.

When they were gone, I leaned on the table, hanging my head.

“What the fuck was that?” Zen asked.

“None of your business, that’s what,” I said.

“Don’t you think I deserve an explan—”
