“I thought you didn’t live on Earth.”

Liv smiled at me. “Generally, we don’t, but there are exclusions to every rule, right?”

I guessed she was right.

“Liv and Colter are here to help out with Emmie,” Wesley said just when I tried to figure out how to ask that without sounding rude.

“Well, that’s not quite true,” Liv said. “We’re here to helpyouhelp Emmie.”

“What does that mean?” I asked.

Wesley walked around the desk.

“Colter and I will be at the bar,” he said to Liv. “I’ll send Circe.” He glanced at me. “We’ll take care of Emmie while you girls talk.”

I swallowed hard, my stomach twisting in a knot of nerves. What was going on? It sounded ominous. Panic settled in my stomach, but it didn’t take hold of me—something about Liv kept me calm. She had an aura around her, her magic soothing even to me, who was just human and not able to feel it as strongly as that.

“Why is Circe joining us?”

“You know,” Liv said, not answering my question, “I’ve always wanted a family. When I came to Earth, I gave up my memories so I could save the world from pure evil, and I remember how much I missed knowing where I came from, knowing a family.”

“That must have been hard.”

“It was,” Liv said. “So, when Wesley came to us and told us about your situation with Emmie and the trouble you’re going through, my heart went out to you. Family is beautiful. We owe it to ourselves and each other to keep that bond sacred, to do what we can to protect it. It’s why, despite only knowingofWesley and not knowing him personally, I know it’s the right thing to do to help. Itfeltright, and us women always do well when we follow our gut.”

She smiled warmly at me.

“Our men understand it’s best to listen to us, too,” she added with a wink.

I wasn’t sure what to make of it. I knew that alphas and their territory were a big deal, that alliances and war and all the rest of it was much like it had been in medieval times. Why was Liv telling me all this?

“How much do you know about who you are and where you come from?” she asked.

“I don’t know… my mom died when I was younger, and I never really knew my dad, so I don’t know much about my extended family. I had an aunt on my dad’s side—a great aunt, I should say—who I inherited a house from, but that’s all I really know.”

The door opened, and Circe stepped in. She smiled at me before she nodded at Liv. It was clear which one of the two was in charge. Circe’s attitude changed when she was in the room with Liv, becoming submissive when I’d always known her to be someone who stood on her own two feet and knew who she was in this world.

“You can take a seat,” Liv said to Circe, who made herself comfortable in the armchair. She nodded at the armchair, looking at me, and I did the same.

She remained standing.

“Wesley asked me to come here so we can help you find your dragon,” she said to me.

“My what?”

“I’m going to get to the point, because we don’t have a lot of time here before we have to go back to New York. You’re a descendant of a very powerful line of dragons. Over the years, the power was diluted thanks to the shifters marrying other enchanted beings, but that doesn’t mean you don’t still have your roots. I’m here to help you go back to them.”

“What does that mean?” I asked.

“It means you’re going to be a dragon shifter, too,” Circe said.

“What?!” I choked out, my voice thin and high-pitched.

“You have what it takes to be a powerful shifter, and I’m going to bring forth the dragon, so that you have the magic to look after Emmie and her power.”

I stared at them both, trying to wrap my mind around what they were saying.

“Of course, I’m not going to do anything if you don’t want it,” Liv said gently. “At the end of the day, it’s still your choice.”
