“I was wrong,” Zen added. “To go there and to be a dick to you when I should have fallen in line.” He turned his eyes back to me, and I stared him down, but Zen was being serious. He felt sorry about what he did, he deferred to my authority, and he’d actually tried to do something.

“What did you find out while you were there?” I asked.

“Not much,” Zen said, clearing his throat, and looked like he felt stupid to report that back to me. “I was picked up before I could really find anything worth our while.”

“Damn it,” I cussed. I took a deep breath and tried to swallow my anger. My skin trembled with magic, and I was hot under the collar—although we were both naked—but I had to reel it in. It could have ended a lot worse tonight, and it didn’t.

“Get the fuck out of here,” I said grimly. “We’ll figure the rest of this shit out in the morning.”

Zen nodded and shifted again, using my balcony as a springboard to take flight.

I turned toward the penthouse, the light from inside spilling onto the balcony, welcoming me home.

In the living room, Emmie sat on the carpet, drawing a picture, and Circe and Danna sat on the couches, talking to each other. It looked warm and cozy and like something I wanted to join.

I told her to go find an angel to bring forth her dragon, but she refused.

Angels created shifters. It was through their blood, eons ago, that shifters came into existence at all. Since then, the angels had become so scarce because the vampires craved their blood—it was like a drug to them, and a lot of angels had been hunted, making it dangerous for them to be on Earth. They’d all retreated to the Overworld, where they stayed with the Archangels who’d created them.

The few angels who’d still remained on Earth had reproduced with humans, with fae, with shifters, until their bloodline was so diluted that it didn’t matter they had angel blood in them. Most of those with angel blood had so little of it in their system, they didn’t even know it.

I only knew of one angel who was pure enough that her blood counted for something, and she still stayed on Earth.

One angel, who had a fated mate bond with a dragon shifter. Since Colter had mated Liv, it had become known that she had the kind of power that other alphas and their mates didn’t have. It had become a topic of envy, but no one dared go up against them. She was protected, and despite not knowing them very well, alphas tended to hold the mate bond sacred and accept the beauty that it was.

Liv was an angel. The realization hit me like a ton of bricks.

I glanced at Emmie again, and then at Danna. Instead of going into the warm and cozy penthouse, I turned around and shifted again. This time, I set my course for New York.

DANNA

When I woke up, Emmie was already awake, watching a show with Circe on the large television in Wesley’s living room. I hugged my daughter, but before I could get comfortable and join them for the rest of the movie, Circe told me that Wesley wanted to talk to me.

“He’s in his office,” she said.

“I didn’t even know he had an office,” I said, confused.

Circe told me where to go, and I found another door behind the dining room table in the formal dining room. I’d never seen the door before—it was hidden from sight.

When I knocked on the door, Wesley called for me to enter.

I walked in, and two people stood up from large leather armchairs that faced an equally large oak desk.

The male was terrifying. His hair was cropped close to his head, and his eyes were a very bright blue, so light it was almost like ice. The woman was shorter than me, with brown hair and brown eyes and a sharp, almost pixie-like face.

“Danna, this is Colter and Liv,” Wesley said. “Colter is the alpha in New York, and Liv is his mate.”

“Hi,” I said.

“We’ve heard a lot of good things about you, Danna,” Liv said with a smile.

I didn’t know what it was about her, but I liked her right away. She was soft-spoken and gentle. Colter scared me—he looked hard as nails and like he would lose his shit and ask questions… never.

“Liv is an angel,” Wesley said.

I frowned. I’d heard of angels from Circe after she’d started teaching me about the enchanted world I had to be a part of for Emmie, but meeting one in person was surreal.
