Something inside me curled and moved, feeling alive. It was like an animal, waking up from a long slumber. I didn’t know how it knew it was an animal or why it felt like it was waking up, but I wasn’t alone in my body anymore.

Fear followed on the heels of the fire, and terror gripped me. If I hadn’t felt like I was melting, I might have been cold with fear.

“What’s happening?!” I screeched.

Again, there was no answer from either of the women.

My vision started to blur.

“Circe?” I asked when my vision went black.

“It’s going to be okay, Danna,” Circe said, but her voice sounded very, very far away.

I saw a flash of white, silver, no… it was colorful. I couldn’t tell what I saw at all. A moment later, a large white dragon appeared. She stood in front of me, tall and majestic, long elegant face lifted high in the air, and her eyes shone green like emeralds or jade. Her nostrils flared, and she snorted, shaking her head.

I stared up at this grandiose beast who’d appeared out of the darkness. I reached for her, and she pushed a scaley muzzle into my hand. Warm breath blew against my palm.

Suddenly, the darkness was everywhere, and I was alone again.

And then, I knew nothing at all.

DANNA

Iblinked my eyes open and squinted, looking around the room. The light pierced my eyes, and it felt like a stab into my temples.

I squeezed them shut again and groaned.

“You’re awake,” Circe said, and when I lifted my head, she sat in an armchair in my room. A book lay open on her lap. “How are you feeling?”

I took inventory of my body. Everything felt normal… if normal was on fire.

“Why is it so hot?” I asked. “I’m burning up like crazy.” I swallowed hard. “And it’s hard work to even lift my head.”

“You’re transitioning into your shifter body,” Circe said.

I frowned. Transitioning? What did that mean? Something tugged at the edge of my memory… And then it all rushed back at me.

Liv, the angel.

Dragon magic in my bloodline.

The spell to turn me into a dragon shifter.

Everything about it seemed like a story. None of it could be real. Since the moment we’d been kidnapped the first time, it felt like we’d fallen into some alternate reality of some kind, but it was all real.

“Does it hurt?” Circe asked.

“No,” I said. “I just feel so weak. How long will this last?”

“Not too long, I don’t think, but I don’t know much about humans transitioning into shifters.”

“Is this what Emmie will go through?” I asked.

“No, it will be different for her because she’s been born as a dragon, we didn’t reach back to her ancestors and pull magic forth.”

“Is that what you did to me?” I asked.
