When I swallowed hard, I could still taste the metallic hint of Liv’s blood.

Circe nodded.

“Where is Emmie?” I asked, suddenly worried. How long had I been out?

“She’s with Liv, Colter, and Wesley,” Circe said. “They took her out for ice cream and movies.”

“They’re all so nice to her,” I said, already exhausted after this little bit of conversation. “Especially Wesley.”

“He’s great with her,” Circe said softly.

What would happen now that I was becoming a dragon shifter? Would Wesley think differently about having us in his life? I didn’t even know exactly what it would mean for me to be a dragon shifter. My life was about to change drastically—as if it hadn’t already changed so much—and I had no idea what to expect of this new world.

One thing I knew—I wasn’t going to let my life continue on as such a shitshow. It was time to stand up and take charge. Even if it pissed some people off and they didn’t want to be a part of the ride.

Emmie deserved me taking the reins.Ideserved it.

“What’s on your mind?” Circe asked.

“I was thinking about what Liv said,” I said. “She said our men understand it’s best to listen to us, too.”

Circe didn’t answer me, so I kept going.

“The thing is, Wesleydoesn’t. Not in that sense. Liv and Colter seem like a team, two halves of a whole. That’s what it should be like, right?”

“Yeah,” Circe said.

“Well, if Wesley can’t step up to the plate, then I guess Emmie and I will just do it on our own. I have a lot to learn, still, but I had a lot to learn when I had her, and I did that just fine. We don’t need an alpha or a man.”

Circe smiled at me, nodding more excitedly now.

“I’m so glad you’re finally putting those pieces together. You deserve so much. You’ve done incredible things, and you just needed to see that you’re an amazing woman, able to stand on your own two feet if that’s what you want.”

“Yeah,” I said. “That’s what I want. I don’t need a man in my life to complete me. If he wants us in his life, that would be great, and it would suck if Wesley said he doesn’t want any part of this… but life will keep going, and so will I.”

“You have no idea how happy that makes me,” Circe said. “You’re more powerful now than you’ve ever been, but true power comes from the inside.”

I nodded.

I hated not knowing what to expect. The last time I’d been so unsure of what my future would hold was when I’d gotten pregnant with Emmie. I’d made a lot of sacrifices and changes for her then. I was doing the same now. It was time to stand up and fight for what I needed, and what I needed was to be the master and commander of my own ship.

I closed my eyes. I was exhausted. These were big life decisions. I’d made my choice, but I would put that in motion later. Right now, I needed to rest.

“I’m going to sleep more, if you don’t mind,” I said, already drifting away.

“Of course,” Circe said, her voice feeling further and further away. “Take all the time you need.”

I didn’t know how long I slept, but when I opened my eyes, the light in my room was strange. I looked around, looking for Circe, but the armchair was empty. I strained my ears and heard nothing.

Where was everyone?

I peeled back the covers and carefully swung my legs down to the ground. My body felt impossibly heavy, and I was out of breath already.

I tried to stand, but I was still too weak. How long would this last? I hated feeling so small and helpless, so weak andpathetic.I knew it wouldn’t be forever, it was just while my dragon form was coming into itself… Or however I was supposed to word it. I didn’t really understand exactly how I worked. We’d surpassed science and moved into the realm of magic, and it was a mystery to me.

My door opened slowly.

“Circe?” I asked.
