They threw magic at each other, and I hoped they were on their A-game because I had to focus on Zen and the fight he was bringing to the table.

I was furious with him for betraying me, and I unleashed my anger as I fought him. All this time, he’d gone behind my back, scheming against me and hiding it because he was the one I’d trusted to go out there and find information.

I’d been such a fool. I’d pushed so many good people away, and I’d kept the one man close who’d become my enemy.

Rune was close by, attacking with fervor. He was up against another dragon, but he made quick work of the beast, and the body fell with a heavy thud.

Rune didn’t waste time to think about it. He threw himself into a fight between a bear and an eagle where the bear was about to kill the eagle—one of ours.

Zen attacked with fire and fury, blasting me before he attacked with his claws, trying to scratch and maim. I did the same, countering his attack. I mirrored him, feeding it right back to him.

I was aware of Danna. She went up against another dragon, and for a moment, it looked like she was struggling. She faltered, her power waning and her wings weak.

I found our bond, and I thrust power at her. She recognized my power and grabbed onto it, pulling it closer, drinking it in. With her renewed power, she attacked, and the dragon couldn’t keep up.

The creature fled, looking for a fight with someone smaller than him, and Danna let out a triumphant screech, flapping her majestic white wings.

She took on the next shifter, a bear on the ground. While she fought, two tigers attacked her, joining in.

I wanted to go and help her—she was outnumbered—but Zen attacked with new power. The darkness clung to him, and it grabbed onto me, sticky like tar.

No.

My heart went out to Danna, who was outnumbered, but I had my hands full. Everyone was busy.

Rune finished off his fight, killing the shifter—a panther that had latched on his back—and he rushed to Danna’s aid to help her.

I could focus on my fight again, and I did just that.

All around me, the shifters fought. The air filled with snarls and growls and screams. The smell of spilled blood filled the air, metallic in my nostrils. Some shifters fought to the death, not giving in until they were done. Others gave in and surrendered.

It looked like we were winning the fight.

I’d been distracted, focusing on the others, when Zen came from above and slammed into me. His sharp claws dug into my back, slicing through the scales, and I roared loudly.

I tried to twist out of his grip, but he held on like a leech, and I wasn’t able to hold up his weight and my own.

We tumbled down, spinning and grabbing and cutting and biting. The fire we spewed didn’t go where it should have as we spun in the air.

We hit the ground with a loud thud, and it knocked my breath out, Zen’s body on top of mine. I writhed on the ground, gasping for air.

Zen took the opportunity, and he dug claws into my neck. I felt the razor-sharp nails dig into my veins, slicing through them until he reached the arteries.

His narrow snout and yellow eyes looked malicious, and I imagined him saying something fucked up if he were in human form.

I tried to get out from underneath him, but his claws were jammed into my neck, and I couldn’t get away from him. I spun on the ground, but it just dragged his thick body along with me, causing more damage to my scales, my neck, the flesh that protected my vitals.

Danna was on the other end of my bond, and I was suddenly very aware of her. She wasn’t fighting anymore. She was trying to find me.

I reached for her. I was losing a lot of blood, and if I didn’t get out of this now, I was going to die. Zen would get what he wanted after all.

Danna was suddenly next to me, her white dragon shining like a beacon in the rising sun.

She attacked Zen with a scream so loud and eerie, everyone stopped and stared. Zen had to retrieve his claws from my neck to defend himself, but Danna’s onslaught was so incredible, he could barely hold back.

When he tried to overthrow her, he managed to get her off balance, but Rune was at his back and slammed into his body. Their scales clashed together, and Zen was sandwiched between Danna and Rune.

I hoisted myself up onto my feet. My neck was already starting to heal. It wasn’t only Danna’s bond to me that helped my power, it was also the collective magic of the pack that fought around me. I drew healing power from them, and they gladly gave it to me.
