My heart sinks as I shake my head from side to side. “Research on what?” I snap, expecting him to tell me how it’s all a misunderstanding, of course I can have babies.

“We could adopt, if we were married we have a better chance at being successful, and I can get a job that’s all above board.” He shakes the papers at me. “I’ve spoken to Milo and he isn’t happy with me leaving the family business but he gets it. Especially since he married Alisa.”

I close the door and unlatch the chain before opening it again and frowning.

“What are you telling me here, Danielo?” I ask.

“I’m saying I get we can’t have children because of your health, and your health is my top priority, but I am happy to change anything to be with you. If that means changing my job, I’ll find a way to do it. If it means changing my viewpoint on children, I’ll do that too…”

He wraps his hands around me and pulls me to him, kissing my forehead and inhaling the scent of the shampoo he massaged into my scalp only hours ago.

But it’s no good.

“No, Danielo,” I say quietly. His frown shows me he doesn’t understand. “I don’t want you to have to change for me.”

“But I–” he says but I cut him off with a wave of my hand.

“No. This was never going to be more than a quick fling.” I close the door on him, his confused expression is almost pained as I cut away the chance of us ever having a future together.

I can’t do that to him. I wouldn’t do that to him.

Danielo

I thought I had a chance.

Now I just feel stupid and…used. The feeling of shock and sadness is almost like a physical blow. Why did I ever think this could be forever? I was stupid to believe that she would want more with me. How could she? How could anyone?

The walk back to Sindicate Towers is done on autopilot, and when I arrive outside of the large front entrance I can’t remember how I got there at all.

My phone buzzes, likely Milo or Matteo needing me for something. Diego will be heading back to Spain shortly. Maybe I should head back with him if Milo doesn’t need me here.

The thought of being in the same city as Sienna but not being able to be with her all just feels like too much. With that thought rolling around in my brain, I text my brother and cousins and head to my apartment to pack my bags.

Twenty minutes later Milo and Diego arrive at my apartment, walking in without knocking.

“Jesus, you can’t possibly be pussy whipped that quickly,” my brother mutters, earning himself a glare from me.

“She doesn’t want a relationship and I’m sick of living like this. I want to go back to Spain and work on the business from there.” I direct this to Milo. He is my boss now, the head of the Castille Family. “If not I’ll head to England and see if I can work with the Grants’.”

“Heisserious,” Diego says, scrubbing a hand over his face.

“I can’t keep doing this,” I say. “I feel like I’m only living half a life and why? Because our dad was a psychopath and did this to me.” I gesture to my face, as if I need they didn’t know already. Didn’t seem my scars every single day. “I never thought I’d find someone like Sienna, and I was right. She doesn’t want me.”

“I don’t think that’s to do with the way you look, cousin.” Matteo says as he appears in the doorway, leaning against the frame.

I continue to shove clothes into the duffle bag. “Milo,” I say, ignoring Matteo’s comment. “Please can I return to Spain with Diego?”

“I’d rather you didn’t, but I get it. If Alisa wanted out of this relationship now, I think I’d lose my mind.” Milo shrugs before lifting a hand and clapping me on my shoulder.

I zip up the duffel and look at my brother who also shrugs. “If it’s okay with Milo it’s fine by me. But be warned, Meerah has taken over updating the villa, and I’ve told her she gets to make the choices in the design.”

“I don’t care,” I realise. “I just want to go home.”

Sienna

Three months later

I plaster a smile on my face, knowing it doesn’t reach my eyes but not wanting to worry Sophie. Her own smile falters when she sees me, so I quickly distract her by waving my hands, encouraging her into my apartment and squealing with excitement.
