My thoughts are interrupted by a text, followed by a string of them.

Neil:I called you yesterday.

Neil: Are you busy?

Neil: Can we talk?

Neil: Answer me.

I groan.“Neil is texting me. Let me go deal with this.”

Val gasps. “He’s still bothering you about the house?”

“Yup.”

“The things I would do to hurt that man if I knew I wouldn’t get caught…”

“I draw the line at letting you deliver dildos.”

“This isn’t funny, Len. He cheated on you and got his side piece pregnant, yet he’s still hounding you to sell the house? He shouldn’t be doing this.”

“I’m hoping he’ll be preoccupied once the baby is born, and he’ll forget about me.”

“And if he doesn’t? What are you going to do?”

“I don’t know.” I glance around my bedroom. “Maybe it’s bad juju keeping this house. Maybe I should sell it and start over.”

“Don’t you dare give in to that asshole’s demands. You will die in that house and even then, I will make sure your body stays rotting in there for a good long while before calling it in, just to spite him.”

I choke out a laugh. “You’ve thought about this, I see.”

“I’d get it if you said you didn’t want to live there because it was your shared home. But you love that house and I don’t want you to sell it because he bullied you into it. Sell it if you want to sell it.”

She’s right. I do love this house, despite the fact that I bought it with a man who broke my heart.

“Maybe I can change my number.”

“He still knows where you live. I don’t put it past him to show up unannounced like a stalker.”

My stomach twists at the thought.

“You should get The Ring camera. This way, if he shows up at your house, you can use the footage as proof in court.”

Again with the creepy camera?

“Those aren’t for me.”

“It’s better to have it than not. Promise me you’ll think about it.”

“Fine. I’ll think about it.”

“Good. All right, let me go. I have a kid to bathe and a dinner to prep.” She sucks her teeth. “I’m a famous actress now. I shouldn’t have to deal with this shit.”

I laugh and tell her goodnight. But before I put my phone down, I tap out a text to Neil.

Me:Just because I agreed to split the money with you if I sell the house doesn’t give you the right to bully me into selling it. Please leave me alone.

Neil: I’m not bullying you. Stop being so dramatic.
