Noah scrunches her nose. “Okay. Why are you acting weird?”

“Weird? I’m not acting weird.” Elena’s eyes dart to me and then back to Noah. “I’m fine. Your dad is fine—but not fine as inhot—just like, regular fine. We’re all fine here. Everything is fine.”

Jesus, this woman is nuts when she’s nervous.

It’s adorable.

I cross my arms over my chest and tilt my head.

Her eyes dart between the two of us. “Okay, bye.”

Noah stares after her as she bolts out the door. “What the heck?”

“Don’t ask.” I pinch the bridge of my nose. “Make sure you’re home by nine o’clock. Not a minute later, you understand?”

“Got it.” Noah salutes me. “Thank you, Dad. You’re the best.”

“Thank your lunatic driver. It was her idea.”

Noah smiles. “She’s great, isn’t she?”

I grunt.

Yeah. She really fucking is.

Elena

“Are you coming in?”

I shake my head. “I’m going to call it a night.”

Noah turns to face me in the passenger seat. “I never saw what you bought at the mall.”

“Just a pair of shoes and a pretty necklace. My best friend is getting married next weekend.”

She crinkles her nose. “Do you have to wear an ugly bridesmaid dress?”

“Nope. I got to pick out my own dress and it is fabulous.”

“Weddings always look so fun on TV. Will there be a DJ?”

“Yup.”

Noah stares out the windshield at her house. “Dad never gets invited to weddings.”

“He’s older. His friends might already be married.”

“He never sees his friends very often.” Her lips tug down into a frown. “I feel like he has no life because of me.”

I cover her hand with mine. “It’s not because of you. He works a grueling job. He’s probably tired. And the free time he does have, he wants to spend it with you.”

Noah hums. “I guess.”

The front door opens and Grant steps out onto the porch wearing a black T-shirt with gray sweatpants.

I try to suck the drool back into my mouth before Noah catches it.

Gray sweatpants get me every time.
