“Dad, Elena is going to a wedding. How come we never go to weddings?”

“Do you know anyone getting married?”

“No.”

“Me neither.”

I chuckle as I step outside. “My friend gave me a plus one to the wedding, but I don’t have anyone to take with me. If it’s okay with you, maybe Noah could be my date?”

Noah gasps. “Oh my god, Dad. Youhaveto let me go to the wedding.”

He arches a dark brow at me. “You sure you want her tagging along?”

I wave a hand. “Please, she’ll help me have fun. Every one of my friends is coupled up, so I’ve been the third wheel since my divorce. I’m dreading having to sit on the sidelines during all the slow dances.”

He glances at Noah. “You don’t have anything to wear.”

“I have some old dresses in my closet,” I offer. “We can see what fits her.”

Noah’s eyes widen. “Can you do my hair and makeup too?”

Grant holds up a hand. “Whoa. No one said anything about makeup.”

“Please, Dad? Weddings are fancy. I have to wear makeup.”

His shoulders rise and fall as he exhales. “Fine.”

Noah screeches. “I have to go call Hannah. She’s going to be so jealous.”

“Brush your teeth and get ready for bed,” he calls after her.

“Got it!” she yells back before she disappears inside the house.

I grimace. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to spring this on you. I should’ve asked you first.”

“It’s fine. It’ll make her happy.” His eyes hold mine as the silence stretches between us. “You know, she doesn’t have a lot of women to look up to in her life.”

“I hope you know how seriously I take that. And that you’re letting me spend time with her. I know that might not be easy for you.” I hold out my phone. “If you give me your number, I can send you pictures throughout the night of the wedding. This way you’re not worried sick, wondering how she’s doing.”

“I’d appreciate that very much.” He puts his number into my phone and sends a text to himself. “I know she’ll be fine, but—”

“But you’re her dad, and you’re going to worry. I get it.” I snap my fingers. “Oh, and just so you know, I don’t drink, so you don’t have to worry about me being impaired while I’m with her or anything.”

“You don’t drink at all?”

I shake my head. “My dad drank a lot growing up, so I was never into it.”

His frown deepens. “He should’ve been better for you.”

“It’s okay. My mom was good enough for the both of them.” I reach out and give his shoulder a squeeze. “Just like you are for Noah.”

“I don’t know that I’m as good as two parents.”

“You don’t give yourself enough credit.” I lower my voice. “Can I ask…what happened to Noah’s mother?”

He runs his hand through his hair as his eyes dart to the house. “I don’t like to talk about her.”

“Of course. But Noah seemed to know a little bit about her when she brought her up to me the other day, so I was just curious…”
