“Oh, no. Poor thing.” I clutch my chest. “He’s going to be the best turkey this school has ever seen.”

Val purses her lips. “Okay, spill the beans. You’ve been spending a lot of time at Grant’s house these last few weeks, and I am dying to know what’s going on.”

I catch her up to speed on how Grant and I went from enemies to friends, and I leave out the major details about my attraction to him. My head hasn’t been on right since he asked me to dance on his porch last weekend, followed by the phone sex. We went from innocent flirting to…I don’t even know how to explain what we are.

Val’s eyes widen. “Is his daughter as terrible as we thought?”

“No, not at all.”

“Really?”

“Really. She’s a great kid.”

Val nudges me with her shoulder as she waggles her eyebrows. “And Grant? Is he still an asshole?”

I shake my head and give her a rueful look. “No.”

“Ah, shit.”

“What?”

“You have feelings for him.”

“What? No.”

She nods. “Yes, you do.”

I flick my eyes up to the ceiling and let out a long exhale. “Yes, I do.”

“Len, this is a good thing. You’re into him. Why do you look like someone died?”

“I’m not ready to acknowledge it because once I do then it’s real, and if it’s real, then that means I have to figure out what we’re doing, and then there’s a chance he might not feel the same way, and if he doesn’t feel the same way then I’m going to get hurt, and I’m really not ready to get hurt again.”

“Whoa. How did you just go fromI like himtoI’m getting hurt?Who says you’re going to get hurt?”

“This is the first real something I’ve felt since Neil.” I hike a shoulder. “I’m scared.”

“Have you told him how you feel?”

“Not in the literal sense.” I grimace and lower my voice to a whisper. “We may or may not have had phone sex the other night.”

“Phone sex?!” Val’s voice screeches, garnering the looks of the nearby parents.

“Oh, my god.” I drop my chin to my chest and pray for the floor to swallow me whole. “We’re in an elementary school. Keep your voice down.”

“Sorry.” She holds up her hand and apologizes to the people next to us. “But you can’t tell me juicy details like that in an elementary school. How didthathappen?”

“I don’t know. One second, we were talking, and the next thing I know…” Heat rushes into my cheeks. “It just happened.”

“He’s clearly attracted to you. You don’t have phone calls like that unless you’re into someone. And you’re both single. You’re both attracted to each other, so there’s nothing standing between you. This sounds perfect to me.”

I hike a shoulder. “I don’t know how he feels about me. Or about relationships. He’s been single for a long time. Maybe he doesn’t want something serious.”

“Come on, Len. You’re amazing. Of course he’s going to fall madly in love with you and want to be with you forever.”

I chuckle. “You sound so confident about that.”

“It’s the truth.”
